Asking a previous mentor about what he thinks about an algorithm without sharing any job-related details

For example, my mentor from a previous job is a super talented graphics peogrammer. Can I ask him "What do you think about this algorithm to make graphics render faster, does the math look right?" (Some algorithm I came up with and MIGHT implement for my job) Yoe 2.5 TC:200k

You don't own the code if it's implemented, and shared the IP outside the company. Since your asking if it's OK, you already know that answer.
