[India- Bangalore] Microsoft vs Amazon

From POV of SDE on following factors:

* Work life balance
* Quality of work ( not quantity)
* Compensation
* Career Progress

About me:
3 years of experience. Currently in amazon with shit work on retail website. Frustrated from pagers and delivery. Looking for a good learning experience with quality work at MSFT. Have an SDE2 offer MSFT. Along with Generous hike.

TC - Greater than 35 lacs per annum (total comp) at MSFT. Around 25 lacs per Annum ( total comp) at Amazon. Although could have been promoted in next 6 months and make around same as in MSFT ( probably) But hell with amazon retail shit.

    You are 3 years in Amazon and still at SDE 1 level, did you introspect that issue is with work or your performance.
    If in another cycle you're due for promotion then take it, your comp will be greater than msft, and your last bit of shares will also get vest
    Explore other teams as well, have you?

      Can't see people sleep peacefully at the same salary at which I would probably slog. And what about the pager. Also I think Amazon is not worth it anymore. There are so many big firms paying me more than here with a better work and wlb.

      I need quality of work not quantity. I think uber will definitely have same problem like Amazon. Some teams blindly doing anything to chase business goals. What team btw?

      1. Quality vs quantity - Uber is in an interesting domain that has huge growth potential. Quality of work is definitely equal or better than most teams at MSFT. And reason it is not another sweatshop like amazon is culture. Uber loves its engineers and with IPO nearby and past cultural issues, company has doubled down on such things.

      2. Career growth - I believe Uber is much better than MSFT in this regard. Uber has been hiring most amazing engineers all around and is more dynamic workplace. MSFT is excessively laid back culture to my knowledge ( you are dreaming about it since you are coming from Amazon but believe me, you will get bored very soon). Plus Uber aims to go from 150 employees today to 1000 by 2020. So you will quickly become senior most person in the team 😆

      There are 4-5 teams here in Bangalore. Almost all are hiring.

      @mcbctrum sounds right. I have been following Uber engineering blog posts and that is some quality stuff. Microsoft does has a laid back culture. I joined MS 6 months back as a fresh grad, I feel like being paid for doing nothing worthy. I used to do much better projects in Uni.

    L61 with 36 lakhs is pretty decent. Does that include the target bonus of 50%? Is it L61 or L62?

      No that is the maximum bonus at 61 or 62 ( I take it you are a 61). The bonus people typically get is in the ballpark of half that. So that half (10%) is called target bonus. That is what is typically accounted for when declaring TC on Blind.

      This is however a typical L62 pay. So don’t expect too much of a salary bump next year.
