I’m currently a seasoned SDE2 at amazon. Been doing well, get good projects and see path to the next level SDE3 at least per manager feedback.

At same time I’m hitting 4 years and will not be getting as much stock as I used to from Amazon. Got ping from FB and Google recruiter and decided to give a try. passed phone screen with ease and is preparing onsite.

But Today when I check career website for fb and google for Seattle location, I can only find very few team I’m interested in. I think since Seattle is not FB and Google HQ, there is disadvantage interm of project selections, visibility and decision influencing.

Folk at fb and google in Seattle/Kirkland do you experience this limitation in your daily work? Are you doing project you enjoy?

I like what I’m doing at Amazon and scared I will be match to boring team if I leave.

Get out of that shithole man. That TC is what we pay new grads with competing offers.

Dive and save - they try to do it with cash (base/bonus). For stocks, they need SVP approval and only do it for SDE3s. It's slow and painful process.

How do I know? I went through the same thing 😜.
Amazon doesn't care if you're seasoned or not, they have target TC and lowest variance per band.

I just had my GM approve .... wasn’t too hard and don’t always pertain to target tc .. I was on the high end already

What is a GM? When did Amazon start having those?

@purr so you do sth like show the external offer you got to your manager and explicitly state you might consider staying if they match offer?

For a seasoned Amazonian, I'm surprised you're not aware of Diving Save. Good employees are not let go that easily.

When you're 4-5 months away from 4 years start talking to your manager and express concern about your future earnings. They will generally make sure you're in line with your pay grade. If you don't like it, or want more, state that too.

If you are indeed valuable, there will be no issues in securing extra funding for you. If that doesn't happen, an SDE3 like yourself should have 0 problems landing a gig elsewhere.

Life is to short for worry and what-ifs.

I don’t have any offer yet in hand to get the diving save match. Thanks for the advice.

Did you pass both FB and G phone screens? How were the coding questions? Easy/med? 1 or 2 questions in a screen? Did you know the questions?

Fb was a variation of an lc hard and google question did not appear to be in lc but is in easy/medium difficulty. I did not know the google question.

Did you solve fb quest immediately and without any issues? Did you go to their campus for screening?

Not related to my post but I’ll ans anw. No just normal phone screen call. They don’t expect you to solve perfectly but more of how fast you can come up with optimized approach and translate it to decent code. Few bug and compile error is fine but the least the better.

Thanks for reply! As for reply to your post, I think if you get an offer from either or both, just leave if the offer is better than what you are making. Promo to L6 doesn’t worth it. You will be put to the bottom of the band. Dive and save will work as long as top management knows you.
