Stripe L4
Feb 12 61 Comments

My uplevel to L4 (spans Facebook E6/E7 according to levels.fyi) went through today. Levels are private at Stripe. I can't grab a beer with my coworkers, so celebrating here.

I've been here since 2017 and have been rated Exceeds Expectations at every perf cycle. This was my third attempt at an uplevel.

TC: $863k
No additional RSUs now. Refreshers are once a year.

Any tips for getting high performance?

I think the critical piece is what I’ve been calling the β€œsynthesize step”. It’s not enough to write code or go to meetings or read emails or be a domain expert. True value comes from combining all of these things and deriving insight on what work to tackle. Being able to draw inferences from work adjacent to your own and turn those into value-generating projects is the ticket to success.

Congrats! I’m joining Stripe as L3 soon. Curious what does it take to get to L4? Also how do you evaluate equity value?

Thanks! It is in your best interest to find metrics to support your impact that can be tied back to the business, even better if those metrics are measured in dollars. I shipped multiple projects across different parts of the org that significantly improved margin. Equity (all RSU) is measured with the most recent preferred price.

That sounds fantastic. Did you propose the projects and implement them?

I've never had the opportunity to do that at companies I've worked in so far, with one exception at an early stage startup.

Yes I did πŸ˜„ On the scale of strategic and tactical I skew tactical. I optimize for efficiently executing and help my team do the same to deliver a project. I’ve been trying to pivot domain expertise into strategic vision and that has worked pretty well so far.

Thanks πŸ™ Of the 22 workdays in a month, I work 9a-5p approximately 18 of them. The other 4 days I am out by 8p at the latest. I catch up on email on my phone for about 30min at home after dinner.

Congrats 🎊! Joining soon as a L3. what’s the process like for uplevel? And how long does someone take on average from L3 to L4?
    Feb 13 2
    • Stripe L4
      OP
Thanks 🎊🎊 Process was easy: there is a well defined ladder with 5 categories of skills to tick boxes for. Conversations with your manager to checkpoint your progress. I collaborated with my manager to determine if I had a chance at an uplevel and they would propose me.

I log my accomplishments at the end of every week in a google doc and used that to prepare a two pager on my impact and achievements. I gave this doc to my manager and peers when requesting feedback.

There are three or four levels of calibration all uplevels go through, starting at functional group all the way to the leadership team.

Grats bro. I’ve also been following Stripe for a while and looks like if I apply, I would be mapped to L3. Do you know roughly how much TC is for L3?

Currently senior at Alexa ML infra team 7 YOE.

Levels.fyi is accurate. I make 320 as a remote L3, can make upwards of 400 in SF
