💍 diamond ring

It’s time finally!
For all those people who have been here what is the best time and source to buy a diamond ring? Also please also do share any dos or don’t that may be useful.

I see places (example Macy’s) offering huge discount on rings. How is that possible when it’s all commodity? Is it because they charge huge making charge and discount is mainly in making cost? If that is the case would buying a ring from a developing country like India make more sense?

PS: I would request if the discussion doesn’t tread towards buying a real diamond an unethical or ethical decision.

I gave my fiancée the choice of ring up to $2k (back when I made $17/hr) and she chose the cheapest ring at around $500. I’m still married to her 16 years later, and she’s still a wise, logical, frugal, and practical woman (Our wedding was very inexpensive too). Cheap ring != cheap person.

Buy what you can afford, don’t go into debt for it, and it’s a decision between the two of you so don’t give a fuck about what everyone else thinks about it.

I told her I don’t have money and she sent me links to rings which are 2k. I agree going into debt for a ring is not really worth.

Blue Nile or costco if you want best diamond for money. If you want to show her friends how much $ you can burn, Tiffany’s.

If you are a retail sucker that will go for 50% discount on something that has been marked up 400%, anything in the mall, including Macy’s.

Agree. I don’t understand the need for diamond engagement rings. I hope I’m not the only woman who thinks this way. 🙄

The land of Israel and de beers pretty much have that engrained in almost every woman’s brain. Remember those tv commercials that come on at least nightly? Sure drove up the prices as demand soared.

But hey most women wanted that rock that “lasts forever”

    • Surprised no one on this thread mentioned how synthetic diamonds are now indistinguishable from naturally found ones.

Synthetic diamonds made in China can cause the prices to plummet, freaking out manufacturers.

Diamonds aren't commodities in the true sense, there's plenty of them on earth. There's a reason you won't ever see gold discounted that heavily...

Gold price by weight is nothing. How much do you think gold ring weighs? Say 6g, at 18K it’s 4.5g, at 50$/g it’s barely 225$. The price comes from labor and gemstones. The gemstone pricing lacks transparency, but 4C thing makes a sense in negotiations

I spent 90k on my wife's wedding ring. It was a pretty cool journey. I knew that diamonds are not really worth that as they are abdundant but just bought and locked in a vault by huge diamond corps to keep the value up etc but as we live in a society that values diamonds and certain diamonds have resale value and I wanted to make it a family hierloom and stroke my own ego by buying a huge rock. I did my research and found out all about GIA and what cuts and rock were available and got the setting from HW. They have programs that you and your significant other can go through for this process. Very red carpet, vip experience. If you have money to burn, I recommend it!

I don't know about that but I make money to spend it on what I want. Everyone has different values. I grew up with nothing and saw my family create wealth. I am doing the same. It is your money and life. Use it how you will but just have all the information before you make your decision is the advice I will give. You won't take your assets or money when you die and I made sure my kids have enough but they shouldn't rely on that. If they can't survive by themselves, I have failed as a parent.

    Depends on your partner.

If frugal/practical, anything appropriately sized for their finger and at a decent price (Costco, BlueNile) would do.

If they like “high end” brand-name stuff (see their purses, clothes, car they drive), they’ll probably be disappointed at a gesture to save money. On the other hand, if you have a real winner, she’s happy or will pay the difference to get the ring she wants to wear (yes, this happens).

Whatever you do, the pout or tantrum over your choice of ring is a red flag. Check the return policy on a ring too, for exchanges or in case things just don’t work out for you two.

I think there are diamond certificates that comes with it. Diamond has to be some size minimum for the certificate. Not sure about the bay area. But you can get it delivered i guess.

Depends on what quality of diamond you want to get. Do check out James Allen or Blue Nile. They have high grade GIA certified diamonds and beautiful ring settings at lower cost mainly because there is no expenditure on maintaining brick and mortar stores.

Most important thing while buying a diamond ring is to know the 4 C’s and diamond certifications. Once you know what grade diamond you want, you can compare online prices on www.Rarecarat.com
    Jul 10 2
    • Alibaba Group vXQh35
Agreed. Learn about GIA certificates, and try to match your budget within a category.

I highly recommended to buy a stone and then pay someone to craft/design the ring for you. It will be cheaper + better quality.

EBay is the best place to buy a diamond ring. I usually buy used jewelry , polish them and they appear brand new

Do your own market research there and see what you find. I'm speaking from my experience. I've purchased several pieces of diamond jewelry in India over the years and wouldn't buy here. You would definitely get something decent in $600-$800 range. By decent I mean close to 1Ct, may not be top color and clarity but something like color IJ, VS 1 (dont remember between VS1 and VVS1). And, I repeat, in $2000 you can get something really top notch.

Go the India route if you can. I found great diamond rings there with proper certification that are available at a fraction of the cost here. E.g. got a almost 1C diamond ring in a beautiful setting with great cut, color, clarity for less than $600

I haven’t been to India which btw doesn’t have its own diamond sources, but in other parts of the world the prices for the same quality weren’t much different. Of course, the spreads aren’t as tight as with precious metals but still

    • are they made in India? 😱 8$/h
      Jul 13

      OP
      1. Real diamonds are mined not made
      2. 8$/h is more than average salary of a good engineering college in India, due to PPP.
      3. India cuts most diamond in the world

I wish we'd done colored gemstones for our wedding rings (sapphire or ruby is pretty, cheaper than diamond, and stands out as unique instead of generic).

Unfortunately the grandfather-in-law was a jeweler and was very disapproving of the idea of not-diamonds, so we went with family expectations on that one. Oh well.
