🥇 MAJOR TECH EMPLOYER POWER RANKINGS (SEATTLE ONLY, Q4 2017)

Amazon pk5vq4
Dec 17, 2017 267 Comments

These rankings take into account: desirability, compensation, prestige, reputation, quality of life, exclusivity, company trajectory, social brand value, career growth opportunities, stock performance, location, office quality and a secret sauce of other factors. This analysis is focused specifically on the Seattle market and is normalized to that market, i.e. companies may rank higher/lower here than if we included SF/SV or other markets in the analysis. Companies outside of #10 are not ranked. Remember this is based on a composite of factors so a company’s ranking is not solely dictated by strong/weak performance in one or two areas etc.

      OP
Amazon has more variation than most companies in Seattle due to the variety of businesses and the sheer number of employees, but there’s a pretty clear advantage in comp, opportunity for your career, reputation, desirability etc. vs those companies in mid and low tier. I believe Amazon would compare more unfavorably if this wasn’t just a ranking for the Seattle market. Your experience at any company may vary.

Man, Amazon above Lyft and Uber is laughable. How much coolaid are you drinking? Amazon doesn't even meet most of your criterias (comp, quality of life, reputation are all pretty shitty).

I would bring Amazon down to Microsoft level. Even Microsoft pays their employees better than Amazon for the first few years (and at least you keep your quality of life over here).

Lavida, amazon pays really well in the first year. Indeed, it's all 💰

Yeah can't drink Microsoft coolaid either. It's not all that better than Amazon in terms of prestige. Pay is similar and you can get onsite from a 30 minute behavior interview

@flCL14 our benefits are way better than Amazon.

@flCL14 I got onsite from amazon with 15-20 min behavior/resume based interview. I know couple of friends who got Amazon FTE offers after online coding round.

Before you comment on my company (stated in blind), I don’t work at Intel anymore. And I received offers from both Amazon and Microsoft and turned them down, for a unicorn startup. :)

Mainly differentiated by outcomes of transfers between companies, competitive offer acceptance, compensation, company image/reputation and future trajectory. Difficulty of interview is not the only factor. Microsoft has great quality of life but fares poorly in other categories.

Right. This is juvenile. It’s like the high school kids who ranked colleges based on little else than prestige/popularity, and couldn’t fathom why others would want to attend a “lesser” schools.

Yes, brand recognition matters. But work wherever you’ll be happy and make an impact. There will always be someone or something better.

Amazon's offer was 20% more than my offer at Google. Besides that, I manage a team doing real software at Amazon. At Google, in Kirkland, I would be mostly managing a team monitoring sites and triggering alarms. Also: I talked with the people I'm working with at Amazon. At Google, they made me wait for a committee to decide where I would fit. Clearly, the committee didn't do a great job!

I want two min of my life back for reading this totally crap post.

What you do matters so much more than where you do it. I’d rather be in strategy at Salesforce than in ad sales at fb or google.

None of the top six companies are even hq’d in Seattle, so basically you’re saying you’d prefer to be doing something riding the coattails of a company than being in close proximity to the major decision makers guiding the future of the company, right?

Of the top 10 are any of the companies’ missions really inspiring you? Is monetizing dopamine fueled likes making the world a better place? The thinking in this list is pathetic.

They pay competitively and don’t have a bad reputation for culture like Amazon. Amazon is an absolute sweatshop and terrible place to work by most accounts, there are a handful of ppl that like it and Amazon does do some interesting things but culture weighs very heavily against it.

No offense, OP, but you clearly don't know the industry well if you think MSR is not well regarded. As someone from academia (which it's painfully obvious you are not from) I know that is is widely regarded as the modern day Bell Labs/Xerox PARC. Name one other corporate research division that is doing as much fundamental research as MSR. You can't.

For example, let's look at the best papers in computer science. How many are from MSR? How many are from Google/Apple/FB/Netflix? http://jeffhuang.com/best_paper_awards.html
      Dec 17, 2017
    • Amazon pk5vq4
      OP
I said that it doesn’t matter when ranking these companies. Companies, that is, not divisions. I do know that MSR and some other divisions at Microsoft have great reputations. Google, Facebook etc. also have plenty of well-regarded and poorly-regarded groups. Google has some industry-leading ML research — it doesn’t matter enough for the power ranking. Facebook has industry-leading AI research. Microsoft still ranks where it is, just like Google, Facebook etc. rank where they are. Every company is going to come out and say “but my company should be higher because X” and I get that, but that’s already been considered in the power rankings.

      OP
Valve ranks higher than some bigger companies because of exclusivity, desirability and prestige etc. It’s a very hard company to join, engineers get unprecedented freedom, they’ve done some cutting edge work in VR etc. and they only take very accomplished talent. It doesn’t compare favorably in all aspects.

You're damn right it is, lol. It's harder to join that FB even. That alone ranks it top

    • Microsoft / EngCortanabae
If this tier chart actually meant anything valve would be at the top of top tier, they are extremely small compared to the other companies on this list and hire people based on specific talents
      Dec 18, 2017
    • Cruise Automation / Eng
Valve can never be top tier because they only have one web developer/front end guy and no one in the company takes him seriously. Also the entire steam product is made with a crappy browser wrapper.

I would have combined low and mid tier
    Dec 17, 20174
    • Amazon pk5vq4
      OP
The gap between mid/low is smaller than elite/top and top/high etc. but notably if you combined mid and low a whoooole lot of Microsoft people would be salty (and are already salty) here. There is a lot of movement between employees in mid/low tiers to other companies in mid/low tiers, but not to better tiers.

      Or make it like this:

Elite: relevant brand, competitive offers, RSUs, bonus, enviable brand and instant respect on name alone, utopian work culture

Top: relevant brand, competitive offers, RSUs, bonus, responsive to counter offers, flexible work arrangements

High: relevant brand, competitive offers, RSUs, bonus

Medium: legacy brand, competitive salary, RSUs, bonus

Low: legacy brand, competitive salary, bonus

Shit: companies thinking they can pay below local market, no bonuses, no RSUs, and attract top talent forced to work 80 hour weeks acting like its 2009 all over again.

      Well
I am not sure where this information is coming from, but T-Mobile gives yearly RSUs and yearly bonus.
The base salary is not nearly as competitive as amazon or facebook that's for sure.

I have never found so many victims to add to my skin collection as I have in the homeless in Seattle outside of Amazon buildings. Amazon provides the best skin bags.

Agree with post before about this post being shit. Just left Amazon for double promotion and way more $$$ and less crying at desk. Both are good companies but even in ranking at BEST.

Why is Apple so high? Their tech talent seems on par or less than Microsoft. Amazon shouldn’t be so high - some new grads got an offer after two on campus interviews.

Apple does well on exclusivity, prestige/reputation (especially), company trajectory and career opportunities. Doesn’t do as well in other categories. Remember, not just ranking based on one category. Same can be said for Amazon — highs and lows.

Tableau is shit tier. Place for people who didn’t make it at MSFT. Zero innovation in 10 years.
