These rankings take into account: desirability, compensation, prestige, reputation, quality of life, exclusivity, company trajectory, social brand value, career growth opportunities, stock performance, location, office quality and a secret sauce of other factors. Yeah can't drink Microsoft coolaid either. It's not all that better than Amazon in terms of prestige. Pay is similar and you can get onsite from a 30 minute behavior interview

Lol, this OP is trying hard to shill Amazon. Them bananas must taste mighty fine!

@flCL14 our benefits are way better than Amazon.

@flCL14 I got onsite from amazon with 15-20 min behavior/resume based interview. I know couple of friends who got Amazon FTE offers after online coding round.

Before you comment on my company (stated in blind), I don’t work at Intel anymore. And I received offers from both Amazon and Microsoft and turned them down, for a unicorn startup. :)

      OP
Mainly differentiated by outcomes of transfers between companies, competitive offer acceptance, compensation, company image/reputation and future trajectory. Difficulty of interview is not the only factor. Microsoft has great quality of life but fares poorly in other categories.

Right. This is juvenile. It’s like the high school kids who ranked colleges based on little else than prestige/popularity, and couldn’t fathom why others would want to attend a “lesser” schools.

Yes, brand recognition matters. But work wherever you’ll be happy and make an impact. There will always be someone or something better.

Google and Facebook aren’t the adult Harvard and Yale. Be healthy, be happy.

I want two min of my life back for reading this totally crap post.

What you do matters so much more than where you do it. I’d rather be in strategy at Salesforce than in ad sales at fb or google.

None of the top six companies are even hq’d in Seattle, so basically you’re saying you’d prefer to be doing something riding the coattails of a company than being in close proximity to the major decision makers guiding the future of the company, right?

Of the top 10 are any of the companies’ missions really inspiring you? Is monetizing dopamine fueled likes making the world a better place? The thinking in this list is pathetic.

Amazon has a huge amount of engineers from google and Facebook, as well as Microsoft Uber and lyft. Amazon wouldn’t hold its position in market for many of its services or its prestige without drawing talent from those companies.
      Dec 17, 2017
    • Microsoft vWEG88
I’m really wondering how many Facebook people moved to Amazon in 2017. Does the huge amount mean 10 or 100? I believe less than 2% of Amazon hires this year are from Facebook.

      OP
Uber fares worse here than it would otherwise due to company reputation (one of the worst out of all middle+ companies ranked) and prestige, even though it fares well in other categories. Saying you work for Uber will elicit negative reactions from many.

    • Amazon n01
Amazon's offer was 20% more than my offer at Google. Besides that, I manage a team doing real software at Amazon. At Google, in Kirkland, I would be mostly managing a team monitoring sites and triggering alarms. Also: I talked with the people I'm working with at Amazon. At Google, they made me wait for a committee to decide where I would fit. Clearly, the committee didn't do a great job!

exclusivity, prestige, secret sauce...... what a bunch of elitist crap. Keep thinking you're special because you're an L5 engineer at a company that has 20K of you. You're just a minnow in the ocean and your VP doesn't even know your name. That's the real outside perspective

Not sure about the depth of the management tree at other bigger companies but at FB an L5 would have meetings with their VP and at least have had one Zuck meeting.

  • I would put Zillow in mid tier and Amazon in low tier. Zillow is the lead player in real estate market (which is enormous btw) and are heavily investing in ML. They pay competitively and don’t have a bad reputation for culture like Amazon. Amazon is an absolute sweatshop and terrible place to work by most accounts, there are a handful of ppl that like it and Amazon does do some interesting things but culture weighs very heavily against it.
    Dec 17, 2017 6
    • Amazon looking4
My biggest criteria is the product that gets produced. Zillow has a shit product: the sitt is messy, stale, and not up to date. Speaks volumes about their smartness :(

Redfin has much better product. Zillow cannot beat Redfin, there’s no need to compare with it Amazon.

There’s a lot more than a handful of people that like working at amazon. Just because you’re seeing a confirmation bias of the people who left amazon doesn’t mean that’s how most people who work there feel.

Last I checked Z stock grew at the same trajectory as Amzn over the past few years and we have a choice of taking options or RSU (3x on options that provides exponential value to your comp). So the market has clearly a better view of Z trajectory than your “professional” opinion
