I did not take an offer from Uber back in 2014. Curious to know how much 10k stock units from October 2014 would be in today's date.

I had an offer in 2015. Stock price was $39. Valuation was $51B. Stock price now is $56 (as per Careem deal).

We can reverse engineer if someone can tell number of outstanding shares.

Stock price didn’t double due to dilution

      @wpooh: 7k

But G did well. Got offer at $540. Now it's 1200. So no regrets.

@muga what does dilution mean? Is it same as reverse split

Uber guy in this thread said there was a stock split. So why wouldn't it double?

Uber valuation in 2015 fall was like 50-60b. Now it is 100b. So I'd guess if you had an offer with $N stocks then, now you would have around $2N right?

@oracle: dilution is when company creates new stock out of thin air thereby reducing the value of the existing stock.

    • Apple / EnggtUh6$
But the offer was not $N value stock but actually N shares of stock (e.g. 10k shares of UBER stock). So after every split, you would multiply the numbers of shares you have.

Yes...but at every stock split, the value of existing shares is divided to keep the overall valuation the same...

The problem is that OP didn’t specify if the person joined at 1BN or 20BN and if it was before or after 409A eval. If the offer was 10k RSU at 1BN, even with dilution and taxes, it’s still likely to be several millions. If it’s at the 20BN post 409A valuation, then it’s likely to be only worth 1 million or less (given that the full amount is taxed in 1 single year and plus some dilution)

Yeah if latter I think OP got prob. the same amount in $ by joining google

  • There was a 4:1 stock split so it would be $2-3M

Stock must have split with funding rounds. How many units would 10k units from October 2014 be today?

Stock doesn't split during funding but gets diluted. Stock split doesn't create new stocks.

What? If the stock splits then the number of shares obviously multiplies by the factor of the split.

2014 valuation was already 20bn+ right?
      Apr 13
    • Google praise
@square: number of shares multiply, but you allocate all of them back to existing investors. Eg. If I hold 1 stock of G at $500. Stock gets split into 2 of $250 each then now I hold 2 stocks.
      Apr 13
    • Square SQ1999
Right so the number of shares increases from 1 to 2.

Yes. So my point is "new" shares are not created for the company needed for funding rounds.

But when was the stock split? Because 2014 the valuation was already high as a kite.

I’ve never heard of private company to do stock split. When company does next round of funding, they simply deluge shares (print more if you’d like) there is no pint in splitting

    OP
Hi all, reading through these, it seems like I can assume 40K units (given 4:1 split) and multiply that by the stock price. Dilution doesn't seem to matter. Is my understanding correct? This amounts to 2M for a stock price of $50.

There was no split after 2015. Not sure about 2013-2014 though.

    • Uber gksishc
Dilution matters, but that’s factored into the current fmv. Assuming 2014 offer, your calculation of ~2M is correct.

Why would the stock be $50/share though? $50/share for common stock is what the valuation at 60BN was.

But in 2014 the valuation was 20Bn

It would be roughly 2million after the 4x stock split, but maybe $4million if the stock doubles after 12 months

    • Snapchat BigCoin
Prolly after June 2014, into 40000 shares post split. Not sure about price, but extrapolating from today’s prices? It would be closer to $13/share back then
      Apr 15
    • OpenText / EngFBstockLOL
@BigCoin Split causes share price to decrease, so you should multiple today’s share price my 4. Then divide by how many times Uber grew.
      Apr 15
    • Snapchat BigCoin
I don’t know today’s price. I just know at 60BN valuation it is $40/share. Back in 2014 if OP had joined at 20BN valuation then I’m assuming it’s 1/3 of the price at 60BN. (Which was already after 4:1 the split)

But yeah, I’m not accounting for dilution, and also I don’t know if the person joined before or after The 409A change

@op, also consider that the RSUs will all be taxed at once during IPO, which would cause a higher tax rate. Whereas GSUs would not all tax at once.
    Apr 132
    • Google yrUk68
      OP
I think you owe the tax when you exercise the options: stock price - strike price (in my case it would have been 10K options), so would have paid the taxes already ... additional taxes owed when you sell the stock, but that doesn't need to happen all at once.
      Apr 13
    • OpenText / EngFBstockLOL
Were you offered options or RSUs? For private companies, the RSUs are taxed during IPO.
