115k in Virginia, compared to 130k in San Diego. Would it be wise to move?

Much much better weather... the beach and good tacos. I have no idea if that tc is enough though.

Might end up with a TC of about 145k max

If you’re just starting out, think of this as your starter tc, and grow from there.

That’s pretty new still, you can get nice bumps with each promo or job change.

San Diego hands down. One of the best places to live TC requirement is exaggerated

To each his own. I would take San Diego to Seattle anyday

If the OP is concerned with summer heat, it’s way more miserable in VA during the summer than SD. The humidity is awful.

      ^^ that's exactly my point.

Actually I feel it’s bearable heat with Virginia Beach and NYC close by to not think about the heat. San Diego weather was next level, so if I move for lower salary I would say beautiful weather was the reason.

To maintain same lifestyle, $115K in Blacksburg, VA equates to $185K in San Diego, CA.

Wow I’m honestly surprised to see such high variance. Never expected from VA!

Yeah, the DC metro area is surprisingly expensive and the traffic is truly awful so living further away in an cheaper area is miserable. Salaries / TCs aren’t great either. It’s why I left years ago and it has only gotten more expensive since then. Very unequal state as well. Very affluent cluster around DC, extremely poor everywhere else. Lots of weird taxes as well!

Yes everything said above is right. Except my biweekly paycheck will go down if I join at San Diego with increased tax. I feel like asking for 145 if that’s possible. What you guys think?

Asking for $145k seems reasonable! Usually doesn’t hurt, and if it does, you don’t wanna work there anyway.

How much would it make sense to ask for given they don’t pay that well in San Diego to beat current Virginia comp?

      Approx 3400-3600 after taxes

You’ll have to do the math to see what you need to be comfortable there, do research and talk to people in tech in sd.

Did talk to my friends there, apparently no one is making that much base. I did the math and it comes down to lower than my current if I join for 130

Then no. I personally would search for better opportunities. Can’t move from a decent place to a shoebox and eat crap.

I did SD on 110k. It’s livable but you won’t save a ton. A studio will run you 1500 min here

I live ~5 minutes driving distance to Tyson’s corner and spend $1800/month on a 2b/2b. So it costs me $900/month and all utilities are included.

Where in VA? Arlington / Alexandria is comparable to SD in COL.

Virginia costs much lesser than CA. Nova is growing, so the opportunities are available too.

Stay in Virginia. You’ll say money in the long run.
