Even though the title is DS I rarely get chance to work on ML stuff. What am I supposed to answer when interviewers/HR ask me about my work experience using ML? I don’t really have much. I could talk about school projects but I feel that’s lame. All my current work is writing SQL queries and meaningless, endless data investigation because there are so many bugs in data pipeline. How can I break this cycle and achieve my personal growth? What did you guys do when you were like me? Thank you for suggestions.
Looks like you’re more of a data analyst/engineer than a data scientist if you compare with roles from other companies. The title doesn’t necessarily equate to the pay.
Brainstorm new project for your employer, and spend 10% of your capacity pursuing it.
I don’t think Data Scientist roles are equivalent to ML engineer roles. I know at Oath it was mostly just metric analysis from Flurry/etc.
It’s worse than that. None of the data sources is consistent and there’s always discrepancy due to bugs
Just emphasize what little ML experience you do actually have. Sell yourself for the job you want, not for the job you have and don't want. Brush off the pipeline stuff as less exciting to you. But be warned, modeling jobs are hard to come by. Most managers don't know it, but are actually looking to hire data engineers/DBAs, not data scientists. Or the reverse, where they'll try to hire a data scientist for the pay and title of a data/BI analyst. Both are dumb, but that's the reality. This is why DS turnover rates are so high.
True story. My manager is one of them, even he’s a nice person, all he needs is a bunch of DBAs pulling numbers
That's what ds do in Facebook too. Data scientists Don't do Ml. It's engineers' jobs.
