150k to invest?

Another “I have x to invest” post, hurray! The difference is I also have a POLL. Here are the options I am considering given the current and near term macroeconomic conditions - think a possible Trump impeachment, no-deal Brexit, slowing China.

Right now the vanguard index fund portfolio I’m investing in is:

60% VTSAX
20% VTIAX
20% VBTLX

Goal: portfolio growth for the next 3 years after which the portfolio may be relied upon for income and thus will need liquidity.

3 years is too short a time horizon to invest in stocks, in my opinion. If you can't leave that money in the market for long enough to ride out a down cycle if it hits, I recommend putting it into fixed income of some sort (ex: CD ladder) where the risk/return profile is more in line with your time horizon.

Is that based on a belief that there will be a downturn in 3 years?

I held a ton of cash in early 2016 as cash for similar reasons. I missed tremendous gains in 16,17.

Target is growth and I want the money to get between 5 and 10% annual return over the next 3 years.

What is DCA? B t w, trump impeachment is unlikely to directly impact equities. It’s a political thing and has no consequences on monetary policy.. perhaps you are thinking about ripple effects of that.

You can bet your bacon the market will react to an impeachment. I’m not claiming to know in which direction but there WILL be a reaction to the news.

Stock markets hate instability, so likely will drop if Trump is impeached. Anyway that doesn’t look likely to happen.

Stock markets already have factored in a non-zero probability of trump impeachment. Worst case they factored in pence presidency.. what probably is not baked in is, if 45 is impeached, mueller gives ample and direct evidence on 45, 45 tries to do Saturday massacre and pushes us into constitutional crisis by not resigning yes that will lead to some downside, a temporary one..

@take how so? I spoke to a financial advisor just today who said DCA works best when markets are going down, and if I’m to do it, get as close to lump sum investment as possible ie DCA over the 3 months not the 12. Lump sum theoretically has better returns than DCA because time in the market > timing the market, and my bit on China brexit etc is basically trying to time the market

On average DCA performs worse than a lump sum investment for market backed securities. You need to specify your time horizon for this money... Are you trying to buy a house anytime in the next 7 years? Do you have a kid/s and need liquidity for daycare and such? No point asking strangers for an investment strategy without specifying what your goal is

Well we will see how much stock he will buy now on the dip, assuming he has tons of cash. I think product is fundamentally solid, market is large, execution is poor.. fixable problems imo

Your portfolio is too conservative, a portion 25% ought to be in high growth stocks or fund, diversify and take on more risk. These are the years that you can afford to take the risk in exchange for more growth.
