What would be the equivalent of 185k in the Midwest for the Santa Monica area?
Look up nerdwallet cost of living calculator.Just change the cities to what you want. https://www.nerdwallet.com/cost-of-living-calculator/compare/chicago-il-vs-los-angeles-long-beach-ca
Keep in mind that cost of living calculators use stuff like median home price and will not translate your lifestyle. My cost of living adjustment to New York is like 19% but to get a house like I have with a similar commute I would need like 5x my total comp there
Yeah if you want equal life style I would say 5 mill a year. You can buy a mansion for 185k a year in Nebraska
Santa Monica is one of the most expensive neighborhoods in LA, so cost of living calculators will undershoot
Santa Monica has the same COL as SF Bay Area. Just believe me.
18.5k
Ultimately it is apples to oranges. Tough call based on many factors. How often you eat out, this could add another 1-2k a month. Rent/mortgage, is a 2 bedroom for 4-5k a month acceptable? Cars, insurance, parking, etc. Midwest as in 30 minutes outside of Omaha? Do you plan on saving towards retirement? Kids 1-3? Tuition for each? A single person can make it work at 185k without balling out too hard, even a couple but you won't feel overly secure vs. 185k in St. Louis or whatever.
350k
185k is a lot in Midwest. I would move to Midwest for half of my TC. My current TC is 235k
Why? Just curious because I make close to half your TC and live in Midwest but have always wanted to move out to California.
Housing price and other living expenses. A decent house would cost at least 1.5M
