2019 unicorn, what should I do when selling

I have ~1.5 million in equity with one of the companies that will ipo in 2019.

My plan is to sell everything averaged over a couple of months and buy target date funds. What should I keep in mind when doing this?

Also, I have since moved from CA to an even higher income tax city. Is it worth moving to Seattle for the no income tax?

Am I still in diy territory or do I need professional help? What type of help?

Anything else I should know?

You should hire a tax advisor.

  • By the time it hits IPO, it might worth probably half of that 1.5M so plan accordingly.

      You mean lockup

    • You don’t need the full lockup period for the share to drop 50%

Will that 1.5 instantly vest? Sometimes they are spread across 4 years, so this year you may only get 150k, and it increases annually.

It depends on the type of equity instrument you hold. ISO vs NQSO vs RSU etc
