Product guy working in a startup with technical background. Not going to disclose the country but its in Asia and its not India. Possibly ask me about:

- are we taking your jobs
- tech culture in 3rd world country
- compensation and lifestyle

Bonus point if anyone can guess what the country is.

Smh at all these people who don't know what first, second, and third world means. It was a political ideology categorization of countries during the Soviet era, during which the U.S. declared itself and many of its allies as "first world" and China and other Soviet countries as "second world". The rest of the world was "third world". The term is long outdated.

In terms of development status, China is considered a "developing" country. If you have been there, it would be obvious given the massive differences between its established eastern cities and the rural areas to the west.

Indonesia. Micro finance, p2p lending, and mobile payment are huge there.
Question: What are some of biggest barriers for foreign companies to enter your home market?
    Dec 4, 20173
    • New / Product3.14
      OP
The biggest: infrastructure and resources. They are both underdeveloped.

The second: bureaucracy. If you are huge and want to enter Indonesia you will need a local lobby guy or you will have a hard time. Search for telegram and vimeo block in Indonesia. On paper they block it for national security reason and such, but we all know the main reason.

The last: culture, and consumer behaviour. It is very different from the states, and there are significant differences from our closest neighbour such as SG, MY and TH. But among these three, this would be the least concern.

Also fun fact. Amazon entered Singapore few months ago, right. I would be very intrigued to see how Amazon enter Indonesian market eventually. One of amazon’s strength is their warehouse and delivery system, however there are limited places where you can reach by truck here, and even so the road is bumpy and unpredictable.

The competition here is a bit low that some people dont have a degree. So it is not too hard for me to land a job as long as i stay connected with people. I have had interviews with some first world companies, including amazon, but the short answer is I am not good enough.

Hi! There is something in mind for some time: It is hard for companies (not only tech) to find good employees, check their credentials, let alone making sure the person fit to the culture. This process is time consuming, tiring and sometimes result in objectionable quality.

I am a product guy not engineer guy, so i don’t know how feasible this is. But i would like to apply machine learning to determine which candidates are good fit for the company, and each company would have different goals.

Possible features are type of companies from previous work experience, length of work or even menial things such as choice of words in cv.

Again i do not fully know how complex this would be and hey ideas are cheap right :)

The trend here in this country follows what’s hot 5 years ago in the US: fintech, p2p lending, and e-wallet. There are few reasons for this: first, the majority of the people do not have a bank account, so the potential to disrupt is huge; second, the infrastructure is not well developed so startups are more geared towards basic necessities of human function, instead of leisure related such as airbnb, snap, etc

I was schooled in good schools also i studied abroad for some time. I also like languages and consume a lot of materials in English. I have 8 in IELTS.

I got lucky and this is a privilege, but I was born poor. Used to share a single piece of chicken breast with 2 of my parents for dinner.

But in general there are also more and more people who are proficient in English just like me.

I find the designation of "third world" and this conversation about English preference to be very ethnocentric. Third world does not mean poor, it means "not western". And we should not be evaluating other cultures by how far they stray from their own norms. And we should not be congratulating people for being fluent in English...even though it is, on the international stage, the language of the prestigious, in many countries it a normal to speak multiple languages fluently yet Americans can barely remember chaper 1 vocab from Highschool Spanish 1. I just find it demeaning to be surprised at his ability to speak with facility.

From the government’s perspective it is by no means hostile. But it is clear that the government is still trying to figure out things because this is new to them, so the possibility of this changing is not low.

Also there are few weird regulations that has no clear objective; i.e blocking of reddit because there are porn, mandatory development center for Apple if they want to keep selling in indo, etc.

On micro level this might make sense (more cash and whatnot) but systematically these regulations do not seem to be well thought and do not have clear strategical objectives.

How’s P2P lending in Indonesia? Any traction? What do you think about app like Savethechildren to help street children in Indonesia? Can I find a UI/UX resource in Indonesia and if so, what’s it the prevailing salary for mid level with 5 year experience? Depending on the skill level, you are looking between $1000 - $2000 monthly. This is if you want the good ones with initiative and good design aptitude. If you just want illustrator monkey though, you can get it for way much cheaper (maybe half of that).
      Dec 5, 2017
    • New / Product3.14
      OP
P2P is getting traction but it is not as quick as investors hope it would be, the main blocker is that the market still don’t get what Investing is - for the market the way to gain capital is by working, investment means big purchases such as land, housing or gold.

So all the traction that any p2p lending gets is equivalent to market awareness about investing, this means at the same time p2p compete with other investing channel such as stock markets, bond, and mutual funds.

60% of publicly traded stock are owned by foreigners. That’s how bad the awareness of investing here at the moment.
