How do people do this? I’d have to work 2 jobs to get this.

20 years, half there. Is it just the exceptions that are the most vocal?

What do you want to know? Startup acquired, that company acquired, final company stock tripled. God bless the 90s. Better to be lucky than good although I suppose you can argue the harder you work the luckier you get.

I see a lot of advice against startups. Would you do it again and suggest this strategy?

Absolutley. Startups are fun as hell and the learning opportunity is unparalleled. Wouldn't join for money though, most fail so any windfall should just be considered a cherry on top. For new grads and junior folks I cannot recommend enough.

At year 14 now, guessing it’ll be year 18 when I get there (non-tech, spent a decade in the NGO sector before coming to Google).

How did you move from ngo to Google?

    • Google / Mgmt Jolio
Google actually hires lots of people each year from the NGO / public sectors. In my case, they happened to have a role open in the functional area where I have expertise. Applied, studied / practiced like crazy for the interviews, and fortunately made it through. The professional experience has been great so far, and the upgrade in comp has been life-changing for me and my family.

Another way of looking at this is whether you can command 500k TC when moving around in the industry, not just sitting on appreciated stock vests. Lots of folks with low yoe will likely struggle to get comparable pay, with some exceptions. I reached 500 tc after 14 yoe, with a sharp growth after joining tech space - was in finance space before. A lot has to do with a combination of making sure you grow personally to open the doors when moving around and making a move when appropriate and not sit still. I sat still for too long in one place in the past and paid with growth in both skill and pay. YMMV

How can you do that? Most companies rarely hire at very high levels. For example: L6 at Google or E7 at FB are mostly internally promoted as I’ve heard!

Amazon L7 or L8 is also very rare unless you’re a little James Gosling!

Management track is probably more practical.

Amazon hires L7 all the time.

Thats true to a point. E6 not common, but not that rare. I sat on candidate reviews and saw a decent amount of E6’s hired. E7 are rare for sure. So in that sense E6 seems to be a pretty good spot to move around at such target comp

      Not for L7 sdes.

True for L7 SDEs (PE) too. It is not what one would call "rare". There are some orgs where most PEs were brought in externally.

Agreed. It's one thing to randomly have stock grow irrespective of your merit, and quite another to have a company willing to pay that much to hire you to begin with.

  • 9. Just lucky.

Full disclosure: had a big payout from an old startup that year. My TC went down to 400 afterwards.

    It's a lot of luck.
