8+ hour take home “coding challenge” 😩

for the box internship they assigned a project to make a game which at the minimum takes 8 hours because of the amount of requirements. this was after the 2 or 3 hr hackerrank we passed. and its for an internship...didnt even start it and probably not going to since i already got better offers. never been given a takehome thing that would take more than 2 hours. definitely not interested in the company anymore since a command line game with a bunch of crap features isnt at all what swes make and does not “simulate the nature of work” an intern would even do. we already did this crap when we took intro comp sci classes. very insulted. after this we still have more interviews wtf. google/fb and literally any other company i interviewed with had processes eons better than this crap

would you do something so time consuming for an internship or full time job?

Box is a shitty company. Two years ago I passed a phone interview and they cancelled onsite two hours before. Recruiter said this position is closed, we have another one but you have to apply again.
    So fuck them 😂

Same. Heck I won't be surprised if we applied for the same role.

Reading this post was just a waste of my time. Quit complaining and just take the better internship offer you supposedly got if your not willing to do the work. That sounds in line with a college project so they just wanted to give you something similar. But if you think working as a fte at a company that you'll never have to do bs tasks, then you are just showing your naivety.

Depends. If Box was far and away my best prospect and I was desperate, yes. I'd absolutely hate it, but I'd suck it up and do it. I had ten on-sites with better companies scheduled, probably not

I have worked at many places, but I only did a take home project 3 times in my career.

    1. Facebook. Spent a whole night on it (until 3 am). Got a great offer.

    2. No name startup. Was expected to do it in 3 hours but I decided to make it better so I worked on it for 3 days on and off. Got a great offer.

    3. Netflix. This was an open ended project on a tight deadline. I had to finish it before my onsite, which was 2 days later. Spent 2 whole nights on it, didn’t get much sleep, was extremely tired at onsite. But I did impress them and got an offer that I’d never have dreamt of.

You have to decide how much you value this opportunity. Few hours of your time is nothing if it’ll make you happy for the next few years.

If you don’t want to do it, don’t do it?

Have you ever heard about due diligence?

Sounds like you suit better with google fb and other companies as you mentioned. Good luck.

BTW - I have referred ~5 candidates for that internship position this year who’ve got to the take home challenge step. I hope you’re not one of them. I hope we don’t come across IRL.
