I just found an apartment in mountain view. Its a great apartment with affordable rent. My only concern is that it does not has an air conditioning unit. I want to check if an air conditioner is needed in MTV area or is it enough to go by without one.

I will be moving in during June

There will be about 20 days a year where it'll be really ducking hot. You can get by with a fan or portable unit though.

  • Isn't kind of weird how Silicon Valley is supposed to be the shining city of tech on the hill, but central air conditioning is somehow a luxury that's more scarce than electric vehicles here? Not to mention the $2M shitty Levittown-era single family houses. And the vast amount of homeless shambling around like the Walking Dead.

It still is good. I was expecting it to be more in Mountain View. Nice deal.

Depends on how much you can handle. I can manage the summer with fans. Moreover there are not many very hot days in the summer. How about you give it a try and you can always buy a portable ac if you feel like.

Could you please share where this apartment complex exactly is? I'm moving there sometime in July and this would be really helpful. :)

Only new places have ACs to be honest and they come with like a 1-2k premium. We have 1 really hot month a year. You'll notice that every fan and portable ac is out of stock at this time, so get one early if you need

I bought two portable units and they didn't work. Even if they have the largest BTU that I can buy, they are not powerful enough to cool my room during the hottest summer days. Ended up buying a window unit and it worked. Highly recommend that you get a window unit instead.

Do you have a “mountain view” from your apartment? If not, I wouldn’t take it...

Usually you have a view of the dumpster or (if you are lucky) a neighbor’s window.

On week days you will be in office mostly. If you go out frequently on weekends, 3-4 days in a month is not bad. You will have an ac in living room generally. Heater will takes care in Winters. If you like everything else, that shouldn't be a problem. Jul-sep is the peak summer.

It gets pretty hot here during the summer as others have mentioned. It used to be an area that didn't really need AC but that's changed. A few things that might make a difference, are there different floors? are you on the bottom floor or top floor? Top floor will be warmer than bottom floor. What's the air circulation like? How does the electricity bill get determined? (per apartment? or unit-wide) The last 2 years we've had bad fires in the bay area that have impacted air quality and there have been a few weeks where you needed to keep all windows closed and use an air filter in the summer. Folks without AC units were having a lot of issues.

I moved out of the MTV apartment after 6 months because it was too hot and no ac.

Buy a portable one from Costco, it may suffice if you have a small family

Get window AC if possible. Can get a used unit for $50 on a 2nd hand site and it will be way better than any portable unit.

Born and raised in the Bay Area.... I would highly recommend getting some form of AC because it does get pretty hot during the summer/fall. We tend to get an Indian summer...
