I just found an apartment in mountain view. Its a great apartment with affordable rent. My only concern is that it does not has an air conditioning unit. I want to check if an air conditioner is needed in MTV area or is it enough to go by without one. I will be moving in during June
There will be about 20 days a year where it'll be really ducking hot. You can get by with a fan or portable unit though.
Do you have a “mountain view” from your apartment? If not, I wouldn’t take it...
Usually you have a view of the dumpster or (if you are lucky) a neighbor’s window.
What’s the rent ?
Born and raised in the Bay Area.... I would highly recommend getting some form of AC because it does get pretty hot during the summer/fall. We tend to get an Indian summer...
On week days you will be in office mostly. If you go out frequently on weekends, 3-4 days in a month is not bad. You will have an ac in living room generally. Heater will takes care in Winters. If you like everything else, that shouldn't be a problem. Jul-sep is the peak summer.
You can buy a portable AC for 400$
+1.. usually even cheaper at Costco
I bought two portable units and they didn't work. Even if they have the largest BTU that I can buy, they are not powerful enough to cool my room during the hottest summer days. Ended up buying a window unit and it worked. Highly recommend that you get a window unit instead.
Only new places have ACs to be honest and they come with like a 1-2k premium. We have 1 really hot month a year. You'll notice that every fan and portable ac is out of stock at this time, so get one early if you need
Isn't kind of weird how Silicon Valley is supposed to be the shining city of tech on the hill, but central air conditioning is somehow a luxury that's more scarce than electric vehicles here? Not to mention the $2M shitty Levittown-era single family houses. And the vast amount of homeless shambling around like the Walking Dead.
Get window AC if possible. Can get a used unit for $50 on a 2nd hand site and it will be way better than any portable unit.
Yes, you need AC
