AS evaluation at amazon

Long story short, I got applied scientist offer from amazon. During the interview, the PE of the team explained that the evaluation for AS depends on the qualitative reviews from the team members. He's not aware of any forced stacked ranking for the evaluation. This contradicts with what I read in Blind. Is what the PE said true and forced ranking is done not in all amazon teams/groups?

You stack rank to churn the bottom 10%. When you can’t afford to get rid of that 10%, you don’t. So this is likely organization dependent, but I’m also speaking out of my ass.

sarcasm? (it's hard for me to detect one) So, do you mean that he may not tell all of it? By being 'not aware of a thing' doesn't mean that there is no such thing.

He’s a liar. In our org AS get stack ranked under l8 just like everyone else.

What's your org? Does it applies to all orgs within amazon? My current company doesn't use stack rank, so I'm not familiar with it. What kind of metrics does the managers use to stack rank?

It’s mostly the same in every org, since it’s a Jeff level requirement I believe. You are stack ranked against other employees at the director level. Manager has to fight for you against other managers so you get a good rating. Effectively it ends up being each manager has a quota, and since good people cluster together in teams and bad people cluster in teams, it ends up being very unfair with incompetent people getting good ratings and promotions
