Hello peeps! i have been researching about Austin and how people have decided to relocate there in search of better COL. I am 11 years experinced and currently make
around 280K in SVC. If people working in Austin can chip in their YOE/TC/company in this thread, it will help a lot for people like us who are contemplating a move to Austin!

Largely hype. No where near the career opportunity and growth of bay area.

If you are looking to slow it down then okay. But expect TC to be nearly half of what you get in the Bay Area.

If you can xfer your TC into Austin then good; else forgetaboutit

No. Austin does not have the scope, depth, and sheer number of opportunities as the bay area.

All but one of the FAANG is HQ there.

No major tech leader is HQ in Austin.

Can you make a living in Austin? Sure. But coming from the Bay Area you will have to seriously temper your expectations.

Sheer number of opportunities is irrelevant since the supply of talent is smaller. 🤦🏼‍♂️

Dell, Whole Foods (aka Amazon), NetSolve, (aka Cisco), Indeed, Stratfor, HomeAway, Keller Williams, SolarWinds and a dozen others are all HQ'ed here.

Apple, Amazon, Intel, IBM, AMD, Flextronics, Accenture, Blizzard, Wal Mart all have massive facilities and are top 25 employers in the city.

Facebook and Google are both building/leasing entire buildings down town in the next couple of years.

You are out of touch. Sorry Oracle got you so jaded

I said name major tech leaders HQ in Austin.

None of the companies you listed in the first batch are leaders in tech.

The second batch are just satellite offices away from the mothership.

AMD? The ceo is based in Austin yet they still claim Bay Area is their HQs.

Look. Is there a tech scene in Austin? Yes. But it is largely overhyped and does not even compare to the scene in the Bay Area.

You can do the research for yourself. Austin is usually in the high end of a top 10 list.

      Don't take it personally.

I started in Texas and had offers from multiple big SF companies but couldn’t stand the culture there. I want a life outside tech but everybody there is talking about tech and that drives me crazy. Some people call it rat race or whatever but for me it’s just people too obsess with chasing prestige and TC in SF Bay Area. Also everything is just crazy expensive, the restaurants etc. Just my two cents.

Austin isn’t like SF Bay Area in any way. It’s a lot laid back and people here want it to stay that way.

I have spent 2 months in Thailand and almost 2 years in total in East Asia. Can definitely say that Asian food sucks in Austin

Yup. To steal your thunder: I lived 1 year thoughout SE Asia. The Asian food in Austin is laughable. It's totally westernized, bland and there to give corn-fed, milquetoast white people a feel-good for being 'ethnic'

To be fair, Houston has good eats though.

WTF....I am from east Asia not China. I will tell you this, Asian food in Bay and Austin both suck. If you really wanted to compete, both areas you can find somewhat authentic Asian food but still crappy.

Steak in Texas on the other hand🤩🤩

Have you ever been to Austin? It's way different than the bay area. Plus CoL wise it's not that different except gas and rent
    Sep 30 5

And gas is neglible unless you drive a lot or commute w a Suburban.

This is so true, especially if you're renting near downtown. I recently moved to downtown Seattle and downgraded from a 2 bedroom to a 1 bedroom, but pay less and make double the TC I made in Austin. We were able to get rid of our vehicles as well. Even if we stuck with a 2 bedroom, we'd still be earning way more in Seattle.

I do love Austin, though! Just sucks that there are very few opportunities at FANG.

It’s insane in downtown Austin but if you live and work in the northern part of Austin then the rent is like half of what you pay in downtown Austin. True that the opportunity are limited here but you can still get decent pay if you join the right company.

If I am a rock star, my salary is theoretically limitless in the BAY AREA. And I can maintain that salary when moving across companies.

Compare that with 'you will get decent pay IF you join the right company.'

As far as N Austin: Boring sprawled out suburbia.
For Bay Area folks: imagine a mountain-less Morgan Hill x10 w newer and bigger homes.

    • Indeed quackydck
Can’t argue with that. I am just saying that isn’t that bad but definitely way smaller than Bay Area tech scene. Also Austin is actually a pretty decent city to live in not boring at all. SF Bay is also pretty fun place to live in too.
