How is the Aws EMR team doing in Palo Alto? How is the culture there?
This is AWS in general.
This answer is specific to the EMR control plane team: EMR in Palo Alto currently doesn't have any managers, because one got fired for putting a recently pregnant woman on the dev list and the other quit because upper management in Seattle had him sidelined. The Seattle team is worse. An L6 manager got fired a couple of months ago for incompetence and for treating the team like his personal errand boy so he can get to L7. That leaves the Seattle team with just one other L6 manager who was appointed by the guy who got fired, for being a good lackey. This guy who has the worst tech survey ratings is currently busy destroying what's left in Seattle with his ineptitude. But the funny thing is, he seems to have some serious patronage from the people above him since I am surprised he's still around. Oh and then there's the NYC team with mostly L6s and PEs to ensure whatever little quality work exists in EMR goes to them while the other teams starve for work. Fun fact: there hasn't been a single promo on the Seattle team in the last few quarters because there's no decent projects to show for a promotion.
I see new managers in the last year. Are they any better? Looking at L6 position in both Palo Alto and Seattle. Prefer moving to Seattle though.
The Seattle team is getting better now. Palo Alto team will take few more months to establish themselves. New York team is growing.
How is it now? Any better?

Avoid teams with only Chinese or Indians especially with a Chinese/Indian manager
1. Do you want to spend thanksgiving working? 2. Do you want to have standups on weekends? 3. Do you want to work from 8am to 2-3am including weekends? 4. Do you want to have unrealistic expectations? 5. Do you want to have low IQ managers that thrive under bureaucracy? If you answered yes to all these then go ahead join. Want proof go today to the AWS building at 1am and see how many cars are still there and watch as people start leaving around that time.
Exactly. Just to level set, this is only about emr
Wait is this hyperbole or is EMR really that bad ? No first hand knowledge, but I've seen a few people on Blind say it's a good team
