Is it just me, or does pretty much every "women in tech" event seem to cost money, almost without exception? In particular, I can name girl geek x dinners and tech ladies events, but it's definitely not limited to just those. In contrast, I rarely see more general events (or even guy-oriented events) cost money. Has anyone else noticed this? If not, do you know where I can find some cool free tech events?
They often have free tickets or discounts for those who have a compelling story and can’t pay the price. Also employers sponsor a lot of those event, I would have not attended if I had to pay from my own pocket. Meetups are free though. What are the guy oriented events that are free? Are you sure you are comparing apples to apples?
I haven't seen a lot of employer sponsored ones! Even though girl geek x is supposed to be. I guess it's more general ones, like "learn how to ____” or some panel or something. I guess the guy ones are more meetup-style. I guess it really boils down to - why aren't more employers sponsoring women in tech events as opposed to every other kind of event? Most talks or dinners (usually at the company's office) not oriented around women in tech seem to be free from what I've seen Actually, now that I think about it, a ridiculous number of women in tech MEETUPS tend to be paid too. Like girl geek x. And this is actually especially true with talks - I've rarely ever seen a talk about, say, "how to break through the glass ceiling" being free, while I see a lot of things like "how to parallelize your application" for free
I attended this one a few times, it was free: https://www.meetup.com/SiliconValleyCWIC/events/188203052/ Women in Product also has a bunch of free events and smaller mentoring groups.
Why promote segregation and exclusivity? Have tech focused events, period. And make them more inclusive by participating and volunteering in organizing it. Don’t have gender focused events.
I'm fine with this, but then we should just make them all free
Agreed. Or make it free + required 2 hrs of volunteering if you can’t pay.

I’d love to see more companies sponsor women in tech events.
@Microsoft and @SAP have a lot!
why womens clothes are much more expensive?
Are you looking at Saks? There’s always fast and cheap fashion (F21).
my company have plenty of free tshirts, only male engineer wear them
I notice it too but it’s just like any other events at venues where you have to pay for logistics/operation. It would be nice if companies can sponsor events by lending space or free tickets.
I always try to do this. Sometimes I get funding, sometimes I don't.

How do you propose they pay for the events?
I considered that, but for whatever reason, non-women-specific events don't seem to be paid quite as often. Also, corporate sponsorship is often (although not always!) an option.
