I was hoping to interview for an L5 position but was offered L4. I have 5.5 yoe, 1.5 yoe at a tier 3 tech company, and 4 yoe at large fortunate 100. Verbal offer is for around 275k at L4. I was hoping for 350k at L5. Current TC is 250k. Would it be better to accept the small bump in TC and try to promo to L5 within 2 years, or reinterview in 2 years at L5? Do people who join as L5 have higher TC than those who get promoted to L5?
Accept, 2 years is a decent time frame in which to try for a promo. Hit the ground running. Ask and learn what they want for you to go to L65 (don't mention your mental timeframe as it may happen quicker if the stars align)
Given your low YOE, there is no benefit of not joining now. Why not stay at Google while you are working for L5?
I think it's because I think that if I join as L4 and get promo, I might end up with a lower TC than if I just reinterview in 2 years
The dollar cost you are talking about is nothing compared to Google on resume for two yrs !
$275k is a pretty good start at L4
Had the same choice. Decided to join Google, and now I’m happy I did.
$25k pay rise is pretty weak. Hopefully your dick game isn't as bad as your negotiating skills. Or not negotiated yet?
It’s 10%, not terrible plus google benefits and name on resume
Think Zillow, Tinder, Twitter, etc. Definitely a company most people have heard of, though not necessarily a prestigious place to work.
Twitter isn’t a tier 3
A friend recently joined Google Seattle at L4 at 300k. You could probably negotiate. You should join at L4 and then reinterview elsewhere for L5 in a couple to three years for much higher TC.
Accept definitely! It's the brand that matters
You can have both. Google will frequently give out of band L4 offers after downleveling someone. You just need to properly negotiate.

Ever wonder how a few of your coworkers got hired in the first place?
There is no guarantee you will get an offer later. People on here think they can just turn down offers and pick them up later. If you want to work there then take it now. Also your resume will be better for it. The benefits probably add some to your final tc.
