Ignore the company tag, I'm at a big consulting company now. I was hired as a data engineer. I'm on a team made up of data engineers, data scientists and data analysts. Today my manager gave me a heads up that the engineers' titles in the HR system are being changed to analyst but that it's "administrative, won't affect pay or anything so don't freak out". Should I believe that?
That's good advice. Thanks
Where’s the 🍿 option?
Hard to say, however keep this in mind: when you change companies in the future and your next job does a background check, they will see your exact title. It might be a discrepancy if it’s too far off from what you put on your resume.
That's exactly what I was thinking. I held on to my offer letter just in case, but I don't think it would be smart to raise that concern with my manager 😂
No one assumes you'll be a lifer, safe to ask. In fact, you should ask. Title has value for your resume and is something people negotiate along side TC. You should have an assurance that someone will confirm your title as you would list it on a resume. Else you'll need to either adjust your resume to match a position you don't actually hold but that matches records, or you'll have to explain every time there's a background check. For the last point, I'll go farther and say that you'll want assurances on that for your peace of mind. I've had an employer change my title around several times for the same job, and ever since have been nervous about every application failing on this bureaucratic technicality.
