Hi Blind! I have been working at Magic Leap(FL)for about a year now. As this is my first job, I wanted to know if you had any advice for someone just starting their career in the tech industry. What would you tell a 20 something version of yourself if you met them now? What mistakes did you make and what can I learn from them? YOE: ~1 Edu: MS 100k
Never stop learning, take it upon yourself to always be learning outside of work as well.
While you're at it, be learning grammar.
- You don’t know everything. - Clean code bases exist as much as unicorns do. - Use PR’s to learn a projects code base. - Find a problem, fix the problem. The faster you take a “own it” mentality, the faster you will rise.
Thanks! I really should start working on the “own it” mentality. This was helpful!
No matter how you plan you will screw it up.
Don't be so anxious about looking like an idiot and just ask for help if you need it. Balanced with: Never ask the same question twice.
This took a while to know but yep - one of the best advice I’ve ever gotten!
“Never ask the same question twice” is good advise
0. Family & health come first, above all! 1. Contribute to 401k and/or Roth IRA 2. Save money (any amount) every month 3. Let your RSUs grow after vesting 4. See above 4 suggestions 5. Most people will not end up working on life changing projects. That’s OK! Do your work with dedication, try to enjoy it, merit your salary, but at the end of the day, it’s just a means to a paycheck. Do not take work personally! When you come home from a long day’s work, and had a bad day (project not going well, coworkers backstabbing you, manager incompetent, meetings waste of time, etc.) , all you need is a smile from a child, a spouse or other loved ones to make all your problems go away. That’s the beauty of life and family. And last, okay here are some common sense things: 1. Don’t ever burn your bridges 2. You want higher TC, don’t stay in one place 3. Know your strengths, more importantly your weaknesses 4. Interested in management? Some ass kissing and politics are a must The list goes on...I already see others have posted some good suggestions too
Thank you for taking the time to write a detailed reply! Definitely will keep all these things in my mind. Thank you good sir/madam!
You’re more than welcome! I would’ve been much much better off financially if someone had told me some of the things I listed above. I learned the hard way, but if a few words can help someone else, I’d gladly give them. Best of luck to you!
