I have been at the firm for 5 years and recently changed teams internally 2 months ago. Amazon took so long to get back to me that I thought that ship sailed. Anyway, I accepted an offer and am starting in July. It’s killing me not to tell my new boss since I am ramping up and they are spending money on training me. What do I do? Btw, I am a manager currently. TC: $225k
Give heads up verbally but don’t do it in writing until 2 weeks notice. This way you give them heads up but make it tough to retaliate and let you go (if that is something you are concerned about) ahead of the target date you have in July. Otherwise everyone involved would appreciate the heads up that would allow to find a replacement and ensure smoother transition. I just did that with 2 month heads up and it was much appreciated. YMMV
I did this exact thing. Verbal ahead of time and then official written later date
Dude. The reality is, they may make a big show and fuss about it. But nobody cares. Give them 2 week notice as courtesy, but other than that, it's fine. Think about it this way. If they were gonna lay you off, they won't give you a 2 week notice. So you're being extra generous giving them 2 week notice.
Wait until two weeks before your last day. Give two weeks notice.
I came from consulting. I knew multiple people who left abruptly and everyone always wished them well. I myself left in the middle of a project and and no one gave me a hard time and people seemed happy for me. If anything, consultants are the most understanding because they understand the importance of maintaining relationships.
I guess my biggest hangup is I’ve only been on this new team for 2 months and am just starting to ramp up. I feel bad. I’ve left other jobs but usually after at least a year
Consider the reverse. If they had to swing an axe, the last ones brought onto the team would probably be the first ones popped, all else being equal. Give 2-3 weeks. Even with verbal notice, you could be let go sooner than you planned, or the Amazon offer could be rescinded - even with written contract there are usually outs for them if the economy / budget / org unit / etc. goes sideways.
If you like them I’d try to find a replacement for your role on the project as you approach your giving notice date.
How long was your interview process at Amazon?
Dude deloitte dude. Stop being a narcissistic asshole and think that you're more important than you actually are. Wake the fuck up. You're not that important to your team; you might think you're hot shit, but you're replaceable. And nobody, with the exception of a few close friends, will really gives that much shit about you if you choose to leave. You know what's going to happen after you leave? Nothing. People will move on. They will clear your desk and make room for the next person that comes in. It might get busier for the team, but after a week, nobody would remember that you were there. So stop beating up yourself and posing as a bullshit guilty martyr. Your team may be great people, but the people you talk about are your co workers, working for the company, not you. If they struggle, it's the company's responsibility to backfill your role. Not your problem. Go do everyone a favor, go to your new and better job, and pay it forward by interviewing new candidates and bringing them onto your team. Know that if the company is going to lay you off, despite all your hard work, they're going to give you a call at 8am, tell you to not come in, that they've already packed your shit, and you have to sign a document for your own release in 24 hours to get your severence. They won't give you prior warning, or wait till you find a new job, or buy you dinner, or give you time to say your goodbyes. They will cut your email the day of, lock you out of your own computer, and you're done. So stop pretending like you owe the company. You owe them nothing. Do what is best for your career growth and don't look back. Stop being a little bich and make the move.
Friend of mine tried to give four weeks notice. They kicked him out in two weeks.
Yeah. Cause companies don't give a shit. Realistically, they have to kick your friend out if he carries sensative information.
If you have equity you want to vest.. don’t give notice unless you are ready to walk out the same day or same week. 2 weeks is a courtesy but, make sure to watch out for yourself.
