Advice on how much of bonus to dump in 401k?

anyone aware of the math behind bonus taxation? its just added straight to income and taxed as income tax right? anyone know 2019-2020 income tax levels for CA? usually how much bonus ($ amt) is smart to put into 401k pre-tax and how much should you keep?

- it’s withheld at a higher rate, but counted as regular income on tax day - google the federal and state tax brackets - if you can afford to max your 401k, you should do it - if 🥜, put enough into 401k to max company match - if 🥜 and can open a ROTH IRA, max that after hitting company match max on 401k there’s no difference come tax day on whether you put more bonus or more salary in the 401k - it all equalizes at the end of the year. only slight difference is you would withhold less on bonuses if you contribute a large chunk to 401k, but if you overwithhold it comes back with your tax return anyway so no difference.

Bonus, salary, vested RSUs... doesn’t matter. Put as much money into tax advantaged accounts as legally allowed. ROTH 401(k) ($19k), then converted ROTH IRA ($6k), then HSA ($3.5/7k). Assuming you have ~6 months of expenses in cash available as an emergency fund, if you can afford it, your first ~30k you save each year should go here. The next step is generally dumping most of your remaining money into low (or zero) fee index funds in personal accounts. If you have kids (or plan to) and want to pay for their schooling, investing a few dollars into a 529 education account is also a good idea because it’s also tax advantaged. Depending on your aversion to risk and other factors (like boredom and interest), you can do other shit like real estate and crypto.

Why roth before regular 401k? Do you plan to be in a higher tax bracket in retirement than you are now?
