Got an offer from one of the FAANG in Bay area..I have close to 6 years exp where 4 years abroad, and 2 years here after my masters. It was a software engineer role for a fair compensation. Accepted the offer, and resigned from current company. Current company offered more counter like close to 40% more but still inclined towards new company. So I went back and told this situation to new company. They offered me counter and said that counter requires me to move to Senior role and also the director gave a brief about new position. The director who spoke with new offer, kind of scared me saying expectations will be more, I have to prove as soon as possible since new projects are there.. yadda yadda yadda.. I'm happy for the new offer, at same time feeling slightly scared. He also told me my role has high visibility to executives and hence I need to be more responsible than previous role. I'm bit feeling weird. Why did he say? Is he doubtful about me in that role and they dont want to miss me because I am in last stage of hiring? Or is this something normal? Should I worry for anything or any heads up? Any advices here guys :( TIA.
Which company is upleveling you like this after interview decision? 😱
They definitely want you if they're will to step you up a level. That's the only way to justify the pay increase in their situation. This is a risky move on both sides, but they are willing to take a risk on you. If you think you will fail with expectations then it's likely not a good move to take the offer. Sometimes they can down level and readjust comp, other times you get fired with zero chance to down level.
I dont think I'll fail, but scared dude.. so they won't give me any chances to prove? Will expectations be straight?
The time you get in the beginning is the time to prove. Your goals and scope should have been the discussion you had with the director. Should have covered first 6-12 month vision that you will be considered successful.
Don’t get scared, just work your ass off in the new role, you should be ok.
Yes should do that only i believe
Hey op, you mind sharing the company name in private? I’m preparing to target FNG and would like to get some interview experience and guidance. You can PM me if you are willing to.
I don't think this would be G or F. I have seen several cases where candidates were offered higher level but they had additional interviews.
Think of it as an opportunity not something to be afraid of. You need to be out of your comfort zone to grow. Go rock the new job.
Thanks a lot man! See ya soon :-p
Of course higher level means more expectations. But you should be able to handle it if you generally get things done. Better to start at a higher level than watching your peers go to that level and you struggling for years to be there.
Yes, right. Doubt was why he was telling me that.. I kind of felt scared. Understood that from replies above. Thanks for your words bud!
Well he said this to save his own embarrassment. He had to say something to justify moving you to a higher level without additional interviews. The truth is these companies always try to lowball the offer.

It is very normal. Your director is just trying to prep you to take up higher responsibility. The new company likes you and want you to take up the bigger role. Enjoy the challenge and most importantly be happy.
