I have 10 interns in my department (tech support helpdesk). They’re all young women who are high school seniors and have demonstrated an interest in technology. I’m curious what advice or wisdom the women of Blind would share with these young professionals.
First off, good on you for asking this. My 2 cents: help them connect with networks geared around women in tech. Encourage them to join LinkedIn and join groups focused on what they are interested in. They might be a little young but if they can find 1-2 mentors through such a group it could really help them visualize and understand their options and potential opportunities as they decide on what type of training they want. And it could provide them with an understanding of how the tech working world works and at least hear/read stories on how other women navigated to their current roles.
Here’s a useful article you can share with them. https://ewfinternational.com/uncategorized/mentorship-top-10-take-aways/
If not familiar, check out the Anita Borg institute. They should have relevant resources. Have heard good things about their Grace Hopper conference, if you and/or your students have the opportunity.
