Afraid of wasting my life away at the office...

I love my job but I'm feeling anxious and concerned that I'm spending most of my time at work... Sometimes I stay longer to avoid the horrific commute rush hour.

I am a top performer so my boss allowed 3 consecutive days off WFH (or travel remote) every month IN ADDITION to the usual policy of WFH privilege that most companies have. I feel grateful.

Is extended WFH/remote common in the industry? Which companies allow this and allow to extend the days further if I keep performing well?

Is it possible to work remote for a week on a monthly basis for a FANG company? Or any other company in the industry?

You’re at Amazon. Have you considered working at a company that respects its employees? Microsoft is hiring.

Respects its employees? I was sexually assaulted by Microsoft.

      *By someone at Microsoft

That’s very concerning to hear, but unfortunately the law of large numbers dictates that a company with 100k+ employees is going to have a few like that.

Respectfully, I appreciate it but I wouldn't want to go to Microsoft. I like my job and TC at Amazon but if I were to switch I'd want Uber or Google.

WFH would be a dream for me. The megalomaniac CEO has said that he wants all the workers in the office at the same time, and gives us the legal minimum of PTO (with pressure to use as little of it as possible) and dodges all questions about WFH.

I WFH 3-5 days a week. Sounds like you’re working in a sweatshop. You were probably identified as a weakling that was afraid to lose their job so they are taking advantage of you. I’d put some feelers out there and maybe grow a pair before you move onto the next thing. You’ll be happier.

Cute but I see your not working for FANG or a top company... Still I appreciate your input regardless of how rude you appear...

Do you feel more productive or less when WFH ?

Way more productive, no fucking annoying chomping or clicking on the keyboard from coworkers or constant interruptions about that really important thing which actually isn't important removed from office politics bullshit so I can focus solely on my work. Plus I can take meaningful breaks brain needs to chill every now and again I dont feel I can take meaningful breaks at my office.

^100%. Plus no commuting. That makes a huge difference.

  • Depends on the company. In our company we get an unspoken 1 day WFH. In the mobile team a few of our peeps live Far East and Far South Bay. They have families and they get 3 WFH days a week.

Google, you’re assuming that WFH is less productive than working from the office

Wait so he's a manager? Is he a SDM or an SDE3 specifically? I see my manager swamped in meetings... Seems a bit difficult to attend them remotely no?

I’m not sure I know he manages a team and his team does backend work. But he’s been with Amazon a long time.

Wow that sounds really cool. Why did you leave Dropbox for Oracle may I ask? Specifically I'm asking if it's possible to WFH/remote for an extended period of time like a week... Not just 1 day a week or PTOs

At DropBox you won’t have the same WLB as at Oracle

Recruiters are not engineers. Also, they are sales people. They will tell you whatever you want to hear.

I’ve never had any trouble WFH as much as I want assuming I don’t abuse the privilege *too* much.

This is exactly the policy at my team... But it feels too vague. What if I want 1 month to work remotely? Is that abusing my privilege? I just don't know...
