How prevelant is ageism in private sector tech? I am retired military and not in my 20’s. Seattle area, cyber (non-coder).
My company made a nine figure settlement supposedly for age discrimination.
A lot. Basically young engineers and managers work all 24 hours and expect others to do the same - otherwise you are stereotyped as incompetent and not connected to mission
That’s disheartening to hear, but thanks for your input.
Wisdom and Guile beats youth and beauty. With a security background you have the right skills. As long as you have mediocre people skills you should be just fine.
Ageism exists at Cisco apparently. 50 and you're out.
Still got your TS-SCI? Hit up Amazon if you can pass full-scopes. They give annual $45K bonuses to employees who work in AWS with government customers
Haven’t seen it at Uber. I’m young though. So this is just observational info.
I think it's up or out, unless you're an exceptional engineer.
Go for management track in companies like JPMC... RBC Capital.. they have dedicated veterans hiring program to take them as manager..
I think it really depends, if you're good at what you're doing and are keeping up with tech you won't be subject to it and won't feel it, but, if you're going to a tech company relying on old knowledge and are one of the people who don't keep sharpening the saw, then unfortunately you may see/feel ageism towards you.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
It exists but you probably won’t notice it if you stay out of the Bay Area. And you probably won’t notice it until at least your 40s. However, if you have a security background then there just aren’t enough people. No one can afford to lose security talent.
I’m my 40’s, I guess that’s one strike against me. Thanks for the insight!
