Airbnb Vs Cruise

Yelp pre IPO
Jul 11 63 Comments

I have offers from each of these companies, any insight is helpful.

The Airbnb is substantially higher comp compared to the Cruise offer at current valuation, they also have a money making product and are close to IPO. Culture seems healthier at Airbnb too, and the office just felt significantly less... depressing.

Airbnb: 600K (250K base, 50K sign on + 25% annual bonus, 300K of RSUs)
Cruise: 450K (250K base, 50K sign on + 25% annual bonus, 150K of RSUs)

On the other hand, Cruise is in a fascinating problem space and my role there would have a lot of growth (the team has highly ambitious growth plans - but is not a core AV team, which might make things more frustrating). The recruiter seems to be banking on further equity upside, which seems very uncertain given how rapidly they've taken on funding.

Other than the growth, the roles are similar in terms of what I'd be doing.

Do Cruise or Airbnb employees have thoughts? I've read some pretty damning posts about Cruise here.

Nah, genuinely interested! I think I came to the same conclusion as the commenters here, just wanted the validation. These career moves are somewhat important!

On top of all that, search "Cruise" on Blind to see how terrible the culture at Cruise apparently is.

Airbnb: functional company but it's ... A hotel reservation company
Cruise: so called "dysfunctional" but working on a hard real life rewarding problem.
You pick. I was in a similar position and I picked cruise. Didn't regret it. If you don't give a fuck about what you work on then sure , maximize your TC and go to Facebook

Even within Self-Driving Cars there are tons of great options like Argo AI, Nuro, Waymo etc. Cruise has no excuse to be dysfunctional and toxic.

In my experience it mainly isn't. Some teams might have a bad WLB but that's the worst I have seen.

In my experience some teams exploit your hours with no chance of growth or even proper reward, but some others is just the opposite. Really depends on your team and leaders on the team. Don’t over generalize. You’re intelligent people.

Is that a staff level offer ? Given your yoe it's an amazing offer.

Honestly I was in the same boat as you when I signed for Cruise. I decided to go for the rewarding job working on a real life hard problem.
Everything is definitely not perfect at Cruise. It really depends on the team. That being said I really feel like we are working on something that matters, and it makes you feel great at the end of the day.

If you want money go for Airbnb. It's cash in hand money. Cruise RSUs might be worth a fortune or nothing...
Airbnb is a hotel reservation website. It's going to be an easy peasy job there. Not a lot of challenge. Lot of money but pretty meaningless.
    Depends what you want.

I won’t say Airbnb job is meaningless, especially if you don’t work on the prod side — e.g. for an infrastructure engineer, the gap between cruise and Airbnb is smaller, and you might even have reasons to say that right now, being an Infra engineer at Airbnb might be cooler at Airbnb because you actually have a huge international scale prod system to maintain. But you can also make a point about doing infra at Cruise being cooler because the company is still young and you get a chance to build a lot of things from scratch. That is a chance you hardly ever get anywhere else — well funded, very important question to solve, high requirements for reliability etc.

On the culture side, I agree with this comment that it depends a lot on the team. But same is true for AirBnB, and even for Google. I know first hand that some Google team’s culture can be real fucking shit and it should not get compensated for by most other teams that are doing “just fine”, else there won’t be so many campaigns of “this is not OK Google” every year. Airbnb is also a highly political place, from what my close friends at Airbnb say.

At the end of the day, what culture is toxic might depend on you. What do you want? Is it aligned with their culture? I know people who are super workaholics and like everyone else on their team to be, but such a team will no doubt be toxic for people who want a work life balance. Similarly, if you are a workaholic beast, you might literally throw up at a team of coworkers who can deliver more but choose not to because they want to only work 40 hours a week.

Airbnb! That's real money will be in your account very soon. AV is a few years away, and who knows which company will be the winner. You can join one of them a few years later.

You'd be an idiot not to take Airbnb here. Significantly higher pay, nearing IPO, better culture. I didn't even know what Cruise was and it took me like 3 google searches for the company to even come up. The self driving market is super saturated right now. Do you expect a company owned by GM to beat out Google, Tesla, Apple, Uber, NVidia, BMW, and just about every Chinese tech company on the planet? How sure are you of that? Equity upside is far from ensured here.
    Jul 11 7
    • Google jhgb
It's not GM partnership, it's GM ownership. Partnerships also are worth nothing as every av company has like 5 partners

How many cars did you sell last year Google? Ah that’s right 0. We already have L2 AV OUT IN THE ROAD with the Cadillac CT6.

Google has no business model for AV.

Expect GOOGLE to keep stealing data from users forever and selling it in the creepiest way possible.

Lol what the duck is L2 AV? It's called fuckin cruise control and you can get that on Honda minivan. And how many Cadillacs did you sell to grandpa?

Cruise is just throwing test cars at bad tech to get miles. Ask your new MBA CEO whether he really gets it or not

I’m not convinced you’re a current employee, else you should know we have plenty of new office space coming that I won’t call depressing.

Actually even the current one is fine. This is definitely personal preference so don’t act like it is objective.

Problem is it’s hard to evaluate without specifics. For example, cruise has higher growth potential but we don’t know which portion is equity.

Airbnb is “safer” but also depends on equity. Also your offer sounds fairly standard for an L6; your “specifics” won’t really reveal who you are :)

So the only difference is equity. If you think cruise can 2x or more then go to cruise, otherwise Airbnb is a much safer bet.

I wasn’t sure if cash was different too

Airbnb ftw. TC brand name better chance of IPO.

Cruise is in a good space but company itself is shit. Bad culture bad hire low hiring bar and inflated levels. GM and low chance of IPO at huge valuation already

About the office. I’m going to assume you interviewed for infra because their office is a temp staging area before move to dropbox building at the end of the year. Yeah it’s a bit of a dump

Airbnb. I don’t think it is staff offer. Even if it is staff, it is more on the lower end. 25% annual bonus is not about right. I would say 100k annual bonus at least for staff role

Airbnb might be a better choice for you given the TC and leveling. But it might surprise you when they plan to IPO (close to never) and how your RSU values even if the do (struggling with growth, a reason they didn’t want to go IPO now )
