Airbnb vs Google

Both offer TC 350k for L5 engineers.
Airbnb base 200k, no cash bonus, RSU 600k 4years. If negotiate further, i think RSU could be 700k - 800k based on levels.fyi Assume best case 800k, usually required to sign offer to get it, then Airbnb TC could be 400k, 15% higher than Google.

Google
Pros: RSU is liquid, brand name, choices to transfer teams and do new projects every few years
Cons: too big, may has less impact, promotion is more difficult

Airbnb
Pros: May have bigger share price upside when business grows well. Airbnb should have a lot of new projects and low hanging fruits, and promotion to L6 should be relatively faster than in Google.

Cons: future money, it may IPO in 2020. Airbnb valuation is 31B for about 2 years, not sure how big upside it may has when ipo happens in 2020. Travel market is highly competitive and highly impacted by future potential economic recession.

Assume after a few years in Google, I may still want to try startup or pre-ipo companies, which is better choice now? Your insights are highly appreciated.

Same. If you haven't worked at FANG you should, looks great on the resume and you'll get more RSUs and better role at startups down the road

My impression of airbnb is that there are no challenging projects anymore. Unless you want to work for new products such as Experiences, but they are tiny. You won't learn a lot in terms of tech. At least for ML role.

We have tons and tons of challenges. Especially on the infra side.

Can you mention some of them? Also, what are the bottlenecks for Airbnb on the infra side that they are working on.

Mostly around the transition from Monolith to SOA. Existing tooling can't keep up with the size of the Monolith and SOA tooling is not mature enough for mass transition.

Not a lot of tech challenges, but a lot of exciting and challenging workplace politics.

CEO has said publicly that we are not going to stop at Experiences. The company is growing at a pace that actually feels pretty good, sustainable. You get more meaningful scope than at huge places IMO

Google. I regretted very much that I left Google.

Since I joined Airbnb, Google stock price almost doubled. But Airbnb’s valuation has been plateaued.

Though people are nicer at Airbnb, they’re also less competent compared to peers at Google.

Works are very short-term focused. People would rather spend days to argue that a thing that could be beneficial on the long run is not necessary rather than spending a few hours to just implement that.

As a former Airbnb employee I would say go for Google. Airbnb doesn't have a lot of challenging problems. L6 promo should be easier but also less recognized in the industry. The growth has slowed down so valuation upside is limited IMHO.

Go to Google. L5 median at Airbnb is higher than 600k RSUs. You can get 1mm if you have enough leverage. Still go to Google.

1mm is for many years ago? Not Sure if it is possible now.

What would they give for an L6 then? 1.6mm? Highest I've seen for L5 is 750k and that was once, so I question anyone getting a million at that level.
      Jun 24, 2018
    • Airbnb keOU54
Not accurate at all. 600k is a decent offer for now.
      Jun 24, 2018
    • Airbnb Olivet
I didn’t say it wasn’t decent. But it is below median, and if you have the right leverage you can get $1mm. Look in the Airbnb lounge a few months ago. Same question was asked.

Hmm, even if you become L6 at Airbnb there is likely little or no chance google would still take you in at l6. Also, you have a Paper money offer that they are claiming to be equal to a liquid offer. Why don’t you just buy Airbnb stock from the secondary market and work at google?

L5 to L6 at Airbnb is not necessarily easier than Google. Scope for L5 to grow is very vague. Most eng who left recently are L5s. E.g. some L5s joined and then found that they work for L3 and L4 “tech leads” and were not given right scope, they ended up leaving before 1yr cliff.

FYI, it’s almost as difficult at Airbnb to get to L6. The jump from L5 to L6 in terms of compensation is a joke. Not really interesting and challenging problems that gets green light. There are tons of problems but you can’t work on the meaningful ones since leaders don’t get it. It feels like a kindergarten and you will be asked to influence tons of people to do sth that is obviously right. By influence they mean dum things down so much so that they understand! So obviously Google for work. If you are just want to get money you can negotiate for money but you also risk paper money vs real money!
