Assuming SWE, Uber is solving really hard technical problems at a scale that's comparable to the biggest businesses in the world.
AirBnB operates at an order of magnitude less scale and the technical challenges are more about implementation and integration.

And most of these problems you mentioned seem to be created by Uber so they’re creating problems without any reason instead of solving existing problems in the world

      > Airbnb and Uber are both solving a problem by having people use other people’s things i.e home for living in or vehicle for transportation. They’re pretty similar in that way imo

Most properties don’t have wheels tho 🚘

@OP Uber is solving problems that do exist. As @cjd has mentioned routing and navigation for cars and drivers who taxi as a side gig. Ride share has also existed far before Uber or Lyft they just turned it into billion dollar apps. Car ownership is a problem cos it not only help create pollution but it costs families a lot of money. Food delivery and delivery in general have been existing problems too.

But go to Airbnb if you wanna. These problems that Uber/Lyft are trying to solve are just more fun IMO and actually impacts lots of people and cities.

    • Those problems weren't "created" by Uber, they're problems anybody would have to solve if they want to solve the very real problem of private car ownership, which itself causes other problems like pollution, inefficient usage of resources, loss of time/productivity, lack of safety compared to self driving cars, social inequity etc

I see this advice a lot. But I would rather advise based on what team he/she is joining. Uber product maybe more technically challenging, but he/she may be working on more challenging stuff at Airbnb instead and something small in Uber. Unless both teams look equally interesting.

Uber has much bigger scale; far mire complicated, dynamic, realtime requirement to fulfill a transaction. Another interesting part might be that it has more business lines.

The interview I had was really good but that was just the first one with one interviewer. I haven’t heard good things about Uber’s culture though either. What’s wrong with Airbnb’s?

Technically I find Uber to be much more interesting, as others already pointed out. I am less sure about their business - I hear they are still subsidizing rides. I also realized that I paid Airbnb more in fees (meaning money going directly to them) than I spent on Uber rides (of which only small fraction goes to Uber).
