Have you dealt with it? I go through at least half a whiskey bottle a day.

Reason ? Drinking to get by the work pressure ? Using it as a form of escapism ?

Sounds like anxiety. My job has good wlb and very little stress but I still worry or think about stuff from work after hours and drink as a form of escapism.

Software is just so non linear that not seeing a clear path forward makes me anxious. Sometimes I have to remind myself to take things one day at a time and things always work themselves out.

IMO It is work pressure. Trying to cope up with drinking alcohol daily. Go to a shrink ASAP before this gets out of hand. There are few medications which would abstain you from consuming alcohol. Or if you’re fine with pay cut, find another job which is less stressful.

Go to therapy, workout after work and go hard during your workouts. I love taking high intensity classes at my gym. It really helps will anxiety. Pick up a hobby like cooking...do you like tv shows? There are plenty out there that you can get sucked up into that will help you escape everyday stuff

Take up running but keep it easy, slow and aerobic.

Physical exercise is good. Try playing a sport like adult soccer league, disc golf etc. When you play a sport your mind clears and all you think about for that hour or two is the game

Try AA, search for nearby meetings. Try to get a sponsor as soon as you can. Can't stop drinking cold turkey. The hardest part is changing your social habits. You have to let go of the people in your life who let you get here, who encourage you in your habit. It's a long process of making small decisions every day to improve your life. Forgive yourself when you fall off the wagon, and get right back on. Slips don't mean you can't succeed. Good luck!

Can you imagine meeting someone you know at AA? It would be a instant kill to career progression

Anybody you met at AS should and would keep it to themselves.

Exactly. It's not like HR puts spies there, it's other people dealing with the same shit you are.

There’s a reason “anonymous” is the name. And I disagree. People that overcome addictions often mature /grow a lot in the process. I think it would help your career.

I used to bottle down around the same everyday. What worked for me is to do interesting stuff that requires me to stay sober for the evening or early morning. Gun ranges, night skiing, working out, bowling leagues, Flying classes, scuba classes, etc. I like all of the activities. Put your other interests as a priority. I hope you will find the grit to do this.

I've been sober in AA for 15 years. Its not the only solution-- depends on your situation. But it worked for me. Either way, it's possible to get help if you want it.

Mixing edibles with alcohol leads to less alcohol consumption usually. He should try it.

I bet that works but edibles may be too intense to use continually. Also probably doesn’t address the root of the problem

Half a day should be easy to quit from. Taper down to one drink a day over a week. Do a couple days there and then stop.

Find something that makes you busy. In my case, with my rare disease (so heavy dose of medicine already) and special need child, I can barely even sleep during the night due to physical pain on my body and the fact that I have to change the diapers and deal with my kids’ tantrums several times a night. If I drink more than a can of beer, my household will be a mess next day. I so envy the people without much health issue or special need child.

Thanks, I have cousins who also deal with a special needs baby. I know how hard they work to keep everything in order and best of luck to you

Yep, also agree with this and similar to what some others have said. You need to find some non-work interests. Personal projects, rec sports, fantasy football, volunteering, running marathons or 5Ks, shit like that.
Drinking can take the edge off your day but can quickly turn into a lot more than that.
Have a buddy of mine who is a really smart dude and normal life but is now in rehab with liver failure because hard liquor was his hobby

I used to think I was an alcoholic because every week i would drink.

Now it's maybe once in a month because I've been looking for a job.

Honestly, best thing i can recommend is doing something. For example after work drive somewhere maybe to a cinema and watch a movie.
Another night go do some activity like go kart etc. Where you cannot be slightly intoxicated.

Basically keep yourself busy with fun activities. Then you'll body would realize it doesn't need alcohol

    • New crak
A real alcoholic will use every one of those examples as an opportunity to drink.

Plus, go karting is at least 100 times better whilst intoxicated.

What’s causing it? Or do you have withdrawal symptoms when you don’t drink?

I can’t pinpoint anything causing it. It feels internal and that being drunk I just feel much better overall

You’ve got a hole in your life, drug and alcohol overuse is how a lot of successful people paper over a lack of meaning in life. Speaking from experience

This is normal drinking amount in Eastern Europe. But seriously, stop drinking for a week, if you can't do the week because you're having withdrawals symptoms go see a doctor.

Don't quit cold turkey, instead of finishing a bottle in two days ration it for 5 days and after a month or so ration it for a week. After another month or so ration it for two weeks per bottle.
Excessive drinking is not good for your health.

It’s super common, but not many take the steps to address it properly. I’d say you need some headspace and a therapist to help you navigate your thoughts / ambitions / what makes you happy. You can do this in a bootcamp they call rehab.

Sounds like anxiety is the cause.

Unfortunately finding out what’s going on in our own head is actually really hard. The only advice I can give is to try and shock yourself into a new environment, lifestyle or pace. It has to be extreme to distract yourself.

Don’t try to quit drinking in one shot. Will lead to rebound... neurologically you need to taper off. Lookup GABA rebound if you’re interested in science of it.
