Alexa vs AWS

Sep 25, 2018 24 Comments

Gone thru the loop and considering teams either at Alexa or AWS.
Since I have never worked at Amazon before, wanted to get people’s perspectives on those teams. Levels are the same and the managers seemed okay? How do they stack culturally and prestige?

Because I will be recruited by other companies in a few years like I always do and I want to be part a team that matters.

I don't think it makes that much of a difference, tbh. It matters much more what you have done that others cannot.

Is it fair to say ex-fang are at Wayfair because fang didn’t work out for them?

Could be. I've worked with more ex-FANG at previous jobs than here though, so I was more speaking to prior experience.

Fwiw, Wayfair is shit when it comes to product and engineering. Our CTO was most recently a management consultant at BCG for 10 years and it's not clear that anyone here knows anything about building software.

I pile on the existing sentiment. Please see previous comments.

      Reason?
      Sep 25, 2018
    • Did similar investigation myself and found that the work culture of AWS org is better and even "prestige" wise AWS as a product has more impact on the world than Alexa (just my opinion).

I have actually worked in both. I like Alexa better. AWS has an extremely high operational bar bordering on paranoia (2 man CM rule anybody?). Not saying it’s not well-placed, but it makes for a very stressful work environment.

By Alexa, are you referring to Alexa smart home?

    This is another perspective.
AWS deals mostly about developer and Enterprise customers. You need to be obsessed with making products that make these customers' lives easier.

Alexa ultimately is a consumer product, your customer obsession need to reside with end consumers, and that must be your obsession. (Unless you end up in AVS or ASK or maybe Alexa Auto, then you need to be obsessed with both developers and consumers)

Choose accordingly, in addition to other factors you are considering.

    AWS.
Good managers, good process, kinda of interesting project, initiatives to work with AWS services, normal level of ops, bigger room for enhancement and improvements.
No many senior = you could take lead of many things = few people you could learn from
