SF is a joke of a city. For all the large tech companies here and the wealth that tech has created, we instead have dirty, feces infested streets, piss smells everywhere, a bart system more than 20 years old (for fucks sakes i loaded my clipper card online and it says amount available in 2-3 days and only if i tag my card at a bart station). Caltrain is a joke (but better than bart). SF should be an example to the rest of the world of what’s possible when so many talented people aggregate in one dense location. Instead we have decades old technology and shit infested streets. Where do our taxes go? When you’re taking 10+% of all these 6 figure salaries, there’s no reason the city should be in the state it is...

Everybody seems to want change but no one does anything about it. We all just look down and walk fast when the homeless start hurling trash at us. All of us absorbed in our own little bubble

You act like you can't hang out with friends at your place and not everything closes at 9pm. Bar hopping is not all cracked up as you think it is. If thats you're only ideal of 'fun' that's pretty sad.

MT is rich suburbia. Where people go to have families and die. A bastion of American middle class conventionality and vapid consumer culture

If I want actual culture, I get on a plane and fly to New York. If I want shit-free streets, the Peninsula is fine. Silicon Valley is boring and suburban, sure, but has beautiful nature and pays me a fucking fortune. SF, on the other hand, has neither culture, nor shit-free streets. Just a few decent restaurants and bars, too many billionaires and too many homeless people shooting up and shitting away.

I’ve been living in MT for years and agree it’s boring as fuck. I live with my girlfriend that keeps things somewhat exciting but we’re always looking for things to do outside of the South Bay on weekends. Except for a few bars on Castro and random tech meetups there’s not much else to do around here.

Here’s an unpopular opinion that would never fly with the majority liberals in the city.

I understand no one chooses to be homeless, but we should round them all up. Those who are honestly just in a bad situation, provide them with temporary housing to help them get back on their feet and provide them with jobs, doesnt matter if theyre low paying. Those who are mentally ill should be put in a mental institution to get the care they need. The drug addicts should be placed in forced rehab to help them get clean. The drug dealers should go to jail period like all other drug dealers over the country. For example, police right now occasionally go into tenderloin and round everyone up and then release them right away. How does that make sense? They’re back on the streets in a few days. I would rather see my tax dollars put towards for example housing the mentally ill and keeping them off the streets than how they’re currently used - washing market street every few days to get rid of the smell of piss. Why are we spending money on the effects of homelessness and not the causes of homelessness?

      OP
@workday, not sure at which point i blamed the homeless? I literally prefaced my comment with “i understand no one chooses to be homeless”. My point of this post is everyone in the city is too afraid or unwilling of doing anything about it and that’s bullshit. I literally said provide aid to those who need it like those in a run of bad luck or the mentally ill. I would just rather see some pre-emptive action rather than useless action like washing down the piss covered streets.

“ It’s ironic that their home is now the street because they’ve been driven out of their homes and now you want to drive them off the street.”

^ummm yes. Thats exactly what i want to do. I want to drive them off the streets because nobody belongs on the streets. I want to drive them into rehab centers and mental institutions and temporary housing (or prison if theyve committed a crime like drug dealing which directly fucks up other peoples’ lives). Dont understand why thats so terrible. Your solution is for all us high tech workers to leave so every homeless can get their houses back? I guarantee if that happened, a lot of the homeless now would still be homeless because most homeless need mental care and drug rehab. And you know all of us moving away is never gonna happen so its not a real solution, while what i proposed can be. So no, im not being a dick. I just want to see change

^yeah. For people who misfortune hits hard and fast, provide them temp housing to help them get on their feet. How can they worry about finding a job when theyre worried whether their favorite place to sleep under a bridge is already taken by another homeless?

Nonsensical laws and regulations that kill jobs for people at the bottom (ex $15/hour minimum wage). Demonization of police who don’t want to enforce laws in fear of backlash or know the city/county attorneys will not prosecute for nonviolent drug crimes. Obsession with gun control, yet zero interest in drug control while drugs kill 10x more people than guns. Corrupt city officials who lie and deceive voters on the ballot (Kamala Harris) while saying they just need a little more money.

    ^ that’s homelessness in a nutshell

The BART really annoys me. I have to add as well these damn “extensions” to San Jose has started planning in 1981!!!

    19....81....!!!

And when is the current completion date, 2026. 45 god damn years. Look at China and Japan and the high speed rails they can ramp up in less than one year for fractions of the cost and for multiples of the distance.

    Why...
Dear god why.. and in the end I don’t want a bart extension, I really want a bart revamp. Rip it out and place something new, high tech, fast. This is the parts that make me hate this country (i was born here)

Most don’t give a shit about the history or eccentricity of the city. They want to ride their stupid little busses out of town every morning to Mountain View or Cupertino and live in their modern apartments and not deal with city life. That’s why so many classic SF businesses are closing. The transplants don’t frequent the classic businesses.

Wikipedia is nice but you need to put it into the context, USA is one of the richest countries in the world living better than ever. Average salary is 56k per household, most people have a car, own a house, savings in 401 and take vacations. Tell people in Africa that you only have $4500 per mo to spare. And don’t think in terms of NY/CA real estate and cost of living.

SF is the result of a bunch of people undermining the supply of affordable housing. In other words, NIMBY. Increase the supply of housing, you get less homeless people. Less homeless people = less shit on the street. SF has the opposite problem of cities in Middle America: those cities have supply of homes that exceeds demand so there’s a bunch of vacancies/blight.

What y’all don’t get is the homeless people are not native to sf. They move here in droves because they hear about the good weather, lack of police enforcement and easier living. If you took 5k homeless and dumped them anywhere in the us please show me how it turns out. Please don’t quote the sf city surveys about homeless people saying they are native. Their survey defined native to sf as I think 6 months residency? Also there is an incentive for the homeless to lie as only “residents” can get benefits. The city is amazing in so many ways and if you can’t see that than fuck off.
