6 months ago, a friend referred me to Apple for a SRE position in Cupertino. Didn't hear back from them till a few months ago, a regional recruiter reached out to me for a similar position (but not SRE) in Singapore. I was quite straightforward about the TC that I was aiming for and the type of stuff that interested me but she kept pushing me to try it out even though it was not a good fit. She offered a preliminary "meet and greet the team" session that I accepted, naively. On the day itself, it turned out to be a technical interview round that I was not prepared for. I ended up politely refusing to code Quicksort on a whiteboard because that was not what I was there for. Recently, a new recruiter reached out to me for an actual SRE position and ghosted me after I replied. Am I blacklisted? TC 95k 2 yoe
Blacklists are illegal, but that hasn't stopped big tech companies from using them. So good luck.
Blacklists are not illegal. Companies arenāt forced to hire people that theyāve had prior bad experiences with.
Lol. Refused to code š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£ In modern world SRE = SWE
Yes, it's my bad - but I explicitly asked the interviewer if it was a technical round and they said no. You can't just draw people in under false pretenses to code.
I agree, mhc. That wasnāt cool.
Not likely that you are blacklisted, but they expect some gap between interviews.
Most likely you need to wait at least a year or two before you apply. Grow skills and may be change companies so that they can see change in your abilities

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?
Itās possible
I guess theres no fixing it either
Reach out to an engineer there and explain the situation. If you come in as a referral, itās a new ball game.
