If you don't stereotype each individual based on their gender/race, what's the point of generalizing each group? Try to apply Occam's Razor, so we can focus on TC.
Also, if you are into discrimination, there is a loophole in the form free, legal and acceptable intellectual discrimination. Use it!
Yeah. You’re racist. We’re all at least a little bit. It’s human to naturally categorize things, people included. The fact that we stereotype at all is already us treating people differently by race/appearance. The important thing is to be conscious of your biases and actively take action to help those with less privilege than you. A do more good than harm situation. If you don’t know what actions you are taking to help end a racist system, you are playing into it and perpetuating it. It’s a lot of work, but remember that you are doing your part to dismantle an entire system of prejudice that works against your fellow humans.
I think the term these days is unconscious bias. There are actually some great videos and talks online about how to recognize it within yourself and try to work on changing it.
Stereotype != being racist. So say you are walking home at 3am and a guy with a hoodie looking shady is walking down the same street. What will you assume automatically? A black male? A Hispanic male? An Asian male? A white male? Or would you ever guess that person is a female? If we add some additional fact: you know the neighborhood has a high crime rate and you do know for a fact the neighborhood has a high population of (insert a race/ethnic group). Is the assumption earlier stereotype to the fact you know? In the former, I am old enough to stop guessing which group most of the time. In the latter, yes, I would. I am not racist, because I don’t look at the entire (insert a race/ethnic group) and make a statement in my head: this group of people are trash, lazy, or uneducated. If I do, I would be a racist. Understand the difference? When you make a complete assumption about a group of people without facts, you are racist.
If you have to ask, probably. As long as you don't yell and squint at Vietnamese men driving too slow in Seattle though, you should be fine
No you are not ...definition: "a person who shows or feels discrimination or prejudice against people of other races, or who believes that a particular race is superior to another" .....everyone from every race have these biases.
"Racist" is a loaded word that has been totally redefined in the last 30 years. By the old definition, no. By the new definition, yes - if that's the opinion a minority holds. Hooray for subjective definitions of words.
If you have to ask, then you probably are. Just be aware of it and try to be better.
As it goes now, you probably are if you a cis white male. Especially if you have some extra cash and in a position of power. They will be coming for you.
