So just had one of those 1:1 meetings with manager a few days ago. He mentioned he is a little concerned on my performance in terms of low code commit, and a few LP i lack. He is now assigning me ownership of a new project in 2019 to prove myself in Q1. What does it mean? Ami being put on pip? Im really worried, i do wanna stay at Amazon for a few more years at the current team. What do i do? How easy is it to get on pipped and getting fired here at Amazon? Are you given enough chances ? Also doesnt pip requires an hr document or something which i have to sign?
Welcome to Amazon !!
Deploy more code. Doesn't have to be good code. Just more.
Why don’t you ask the manager on where you stand and what this means? I think you want to get the complete story from the person who matters most - your manager. This is better than fretting over this and destroying your weekend. And yes as the poster above said - kick ass in the next project. Nothing else is more important
Thanks for a well written response. Ill make sure to kick ass on next project. Im just trying to figure out how sensitive the situation is and if there are chances of this getting me into being fired eventually. Or if this is one of those growth or skills developing meeting which he probably had with others. He dis mention that compared to the whole team im concern for u. So this probably meant im in trouble
Considering the time of the year, your manager is probably having these types of meetings with the entire team. You’re not on a PIP, they’re just trying to set you in the right direction so you don’t land on one.
Also, you got to evaluate if working hard in this project and delivering is worth the 0 raise and 0 bonus you will be getting in return. Two months of hardcore interview prep can get you a job for a much higher tc with better wlb and benefits.
This is what is wrong with our industry at the moment - everyone wants to just get the next gig without doing their best in the current one.
That’s what happens when a company pays you less than market rate because you are loyal.
Just ask. If yes, do your best. If no, do your best. By asking you don’t need to ‘guess’ where you are and once you know it you can focus on your work. Don’t be afraid. You are not the only one who face this sort of problem.
As a manager, I’ve done this to people on my team when I believed that the person wasn’t performing/achieving at a level of their potential. My thinking was that maybe this person just needed some explicit responsibility to really perform well (as opposed to independently seeking out more responsibility). As other comments have said, you need to do well in this project and address the specific issues your manager mentioned. Also, it’s important as you work in this project to communicate to your manager how you are succeeding and addressing issues.
i would say that your manager is lining you up for LE and Dev plan. that will happen before any PIP
I think you have a good manager, he has give you good feedback, a wake up call and an opportunity to make things right. You are probably not on PIP right now, else your manager would have told you. If you don’t get things done, you may end up there.
Kick ass in the new project
