So a) in terms of what employers see when the check my references is a severance exit managed differently than a resignation. b) severance is 2 weeks worth of salary? Thanks for the help!! R

Try and get a hold of the employee handbook. It will be useful if you decide to sue them
My company has no policy on PIP. and have already put people on PIP for unsubstantiated /false pretenses. Is it material enough to sue?
If you can prove they discriminated against you in a protected class then your chances of getting payday are high. Otherwise saving emails, keeping notes of conversations you had along with dates and times can help you sue them for unlawful termination. Ultimately you can tell depending on how eager lawyers are to take on your case pro bono

Try to transfer before you’re on a PIP. Once you are on it, you are typically not able to. It’s rather unusual to be given a heads up about this, btw.
Heads up is given to see if you will leave voluntarily because it’s lot of work for the manager and HR to run the PIP. Also, for liability reasons, a company can’t share the reason you are not working there. I also don’t think one can share salary info as well - I’m sure background checks can’t find the salary info. If you really want to get out, then negotiate for a mutual exit wo PIP. Like, ask for 6 weeks or 8 weeks. pip is usually a 1 to 2 month process. First month Is the warning (which you got I think), and 2nd month is PIP execution.
They can share that you were fired but big companies usually won’t.
PIP may block you to be rehired by same employer. It does not show up in background checks. There was case where a company has to pay significant damages for turning the reputation of ex employee.
Block you to work at the same employer? Why the fuck would you want to help a company that wants to give you a pip. Fuck them.
It may just be a crappy manager. They are at all companies, just like cancer cells in a body.
Start acting jerky and cry on your desk. No one will touch you.
Grind Leetcode. Take severance. Realistically, the duration of your PIP is also severance and part of your notice. Treat it as permission to job search immediately.
