Anyone have any reviews for the EC2 team, esp for interns? WLB, culture, etc? I will be interning there soon so I was wondering if AWS is hell even for interns (do I have oncall shifts..??)
Yup! Org is pretty solid. No oncall shifts for interns. Work whatever hours you want, just be present for required meetings, and hit your project goals, and hopefully stretch goals.
I’ve worked closely with a lot of ec2 people. Full timers do on on an oncall rotation. From what I’ve seen, generally it’s 1 week every 2 months. As far as ops goes, it’s highly team dependent. Some teams take ops super seriously and invest heavily in driving down oncall pages; others don’t seem to care much.
EC2 is a mature service and essentially AWS’s cash cow. Their sole job is to essentially make sure it stays up. There are a few initiatives to improve the service and make it more efficient, but most work seems to be around improving the experience and overall integrity.
In all three orgs I’ve worked in/with, it’s been great. As long as you’re efficient with your time, and honest/realistic about what you can get done in a sprint, it’s fine. I average 10am-4-5, and 10-3 on fridays (happy hour food/drinks).
Oh really? Is it considerably higher? I got a return offer from FB so I am 90% going back to there, but am just curious (and ofc I don't want to be a bad intern just because I already have a return)

Pretty laid back as long as you deliver

It’s pretty comfy in my experience
