I was a first year student so at this point I was doing my regular classes and had completed 2 entry level classes and was on the third. All were in java. I made that very clear and didn’t misrepresent myself at all on my resume or in person. The interviewers all asked if I knew DS/A and I was honest in that I had taught myself some bigO and the basic sorts.
#1. I was asked to explain pointers, explain hashing in detail (had never heard of it lol). Explain how to handle collisions in hashing.
#2. I was asked to do provide an optimal solution to crawl a non-binary tree and add a node between each final lead node at what the sum was between them and root. I had no idea how to tackle it as I had never been exposed to trees. (This interviewer made it clear he didn’t want to be there and that we was interviewing dozens of students that day and wasn’t really going to change his question if I hadn’t encountered it before)
I didn’t interview with them the following year and just wrote them off for awhile.
Yeah. Idk why their recruiter even bothered inviting a year 1 student. No University I know teaches algors and DS till year 2 of 4.
Even then no team is going to wait more than a year for an intern to convert to FTE. First hand experience here. Had to interview again for MS because I interned for MS in year 2, then somewhere else in year 3.
