Currently IC-5 @ Oracle, 20 YOE. Amazon AWS SDE Palo Alto, initial offer: 180K base, 210K sign-on over two years, 400K RSU (5/15/40/40) Is this normal or too low? Is IC-5->L6 a good move or a step down?
Great base + sign on - I’d counter on the RSUs
It is a decent offer, and NOT a step down in any sense. There are more experienced and higher level people from elsewhere in bothL5 and L6 levels, FYI.
Base can go to 185k, it's kinda insulting that they didn't give you max base. Sign on can go to 180k year 1 and 110k year 2 Equity can go to 500k over 4 years backloaded.
Wait, that’s for an L6?
I hope you understand the meaning of a range? Or interview performance? Or the difference between a decent offer vs the best offer? It does not help when you slap the max possible range in response to every question - in that case, no one is happy unless the get the absolute best. I am curious to know what your role in Amazon is, and why did you join Amazon at all.
That seems pretty good for Amazon L6 despite your YoE. Did you have competing offers? Averaging everything out that’s close to 330k / yr for the next 4 years. Even google L5s are around the same number.
No competing offers. These are their initial numbers after the onsite. My base at Oracle is actually higher, but not the RSUs. I interviewed at Google for L6, stuck waiting for HC review.
Google L6 or L5? Goog L5 == Amzn L6.
I saw the exact same offer for L6 AND L7 for 20 yoe last month. That's a good offer from my experience.
Decent
Congrats with the offer. In general IC5 to L6 is a step down. But if you are OK with your TC, team and project, I would take it. It is not bad to take max comp and min level since expectations will be lower so you will have better WLB or faster promo.
Aren't everybody moving to OCI now? Why move out now?

very low for 20 YoE but decent otherwise though I’ll never get over how shitty that vesting schedule is
It’s so they can fire u in the first two years if you suck, and so they can make sure you stick around if you’re good
Actually makes sense if you think about it for a second
