Amazon L6 offer

Currently IC-5 @ Oracle, 20 YOE.

Amazon AWS SDE Palo Alto, initial offer:

180K base, 210K sign-on over two years, 400K RSU (5/15/40/40)

Is this normal or too low?

Is IC-5->L6 a good move or a step down?

very low for 20 YoE but decent otherwise

though I’ll never get over how shitty that vesting schedule is

It’s so they can fire u in the first two years if you suck, and so they can make sure you stick around if you’re good

except you lose out on good engineers who don’t want to deal with / be limited by golden handcuffs

Man, people just don’t get it... the vesting schedule is made up for by the larger signing bonus... so the thing to complain about is that you effectively don’t get a real signing bonus

That seems pretty good for Amazon L6 despite your YoE. Did you have competing offers? Averaging everything out that’s close to 330k / yr for the next 4 years. Even google L5s are around the same number.

Google L6. Of course, I will take Google L6 over Amazon L6 if the offer comes my way.

Uhh yeah Google L5 is the same as Amazon L6 lol. L3 is new grad at Google while L4 is new grad at Amazon. Pretty common info lol

You're really annoying. Sde3 at Google is L5 meanwhile sde3 at Amazon is L6. How is that hard to understand.

That’s right. Amazon L7 matching Google L6 in most cases. In like 85% cases. Principal band is a little bit wider and goes to Google L7 a little.

Base can go to 185k, it's kinda insulting that they didn't give you max base.

Sign on can go to 180k year 1 and 110k year 2

Equity can go to 500k over 4 years backloaded.

I hope you understand the meaning of a range? Or interview performance? Or the difference between a decent offer vs the best offer? It does not help when you slap the max possible range in response to every question - in that case, no one is happy unless the get the absolute best. I am curious to know what your role in Amazon is, and why did you join Amazon at all.

I'm also an SDE. Also he's in the Bay area which has a higher max and he has 20 YOE. It doesn't hurt to ask for the max and then the recruiter will bring in numbers that are actually competitive.

FYI - 20 yoe does not mean anything - it’s all about scope and impact.

It is a decent offer, and NOT a step down in any sense. There are more experienced and higher level people from elsewhere in bothL5 and L6 levels, FYI.

Oracle IC5 —> amazon L6 is actually a step down. IC5 maps to L7 at amazon.

In terms of what? Comp? Scope of work? You realize that the bands are quite wide in Amazon, right?

Strange. Ask OP whether his/her comp was more as ic5. You guys should eat crow with do much false confidence.

    Congrats with the offer.
In general IC5 to L6 is a step down. But if you are OK with your TC, team and project, I would take it. It is not bad to take max comp and min level since expectations will be lower so you will have better WLB or faster promo.

I saw the exact same offer for L6 AND L7 for 20 yoe last month. That's a good offer from my experience.
