Hi all- I am currently a VP for Product at a start up (series C, 150 employees) and expecting an offer from Amazon in Seattle at L7 level - Sr Manager role. Does that sound OK, or should a VP at startup go in as Director, L8? I have total 16 years experience with last about 10 years in management. Thanks in advance! @amazon
Ask for L9.
Maybe L10
For L8 at Amazon they are looking at how many layers did you manage. You are in a better shape if you managed directors. But L8’s are often former SVPs and C-suite at a smaller companies. There are exceptions, of course.
Thanks! Prior to this I was at Oracle as a Sr Director and had Directors report to me as well. Does that change anything?
L8 or L10. L9 doesn’t exist as a dumbf# above ^ suggested. L7 is way toooo low
Hey man. I work at Amazon. I know it doesn’t exist. That’s the f**king joke you dense turd burgler.
Were you a real VP or was the title part of your TC? L7 may well be the right level
Said “MVP” in the interview straight deadpan. Swear to god.
Real VP :). Prior to this at Oracle as Sr Director with 30 reports including Directors
CEO’s of acquired companies come in as L8. VP in a smaller startup is very unlikely to have anywhere near the scope of experience required for L8. L8 at amazon typically has 50-200 reportees total depending on the org
VP of a startup should come in as L6. I have seen similar cases. Who is offering you L7?
L6 IMO is too low for my profile. I am even debating if L7 is the right level or should it be L8
That decision is not up to you. Recruiters and hiring managers along with bar raisers evaluate your profile as a fit against role and level. Some candidates are recycled for down leveled roles and some even for uplevelled roles. They will assess your fit to level.
You will not get L8. L7 had a huge comp range though
Thanks @FAANGU. Why won’t I get L8? What’s the L7 comp range? Thank you!!
For the exact reasons we told you. L8 is a director role. Amazon doesn’t give a shit about your current title, only if you meet the bar of the role, both skill wise and experience wise. Also, you can’t negotiate on level. Once you’ve done the interview, if they give you L6 or L7 then in order to get considered for a different level, you’d have to interview again. Your interviewers determine if you meet the bar for L6, L7, or L8. If it was an L8 interview, you would’ve had interviews with other L8’s and some L10’s as well I believe. Once that decision is made, there’s no changing it unless you reinterview.
Whats the offered comp and is it above your expectation?
Asking the real questions 👍
