I had my Online Assessment for Amazon SDE2. I was able to do the first question for all test cases, but failed completely on the second one.
When would I hear back from Amazon to know I failed?
Is it ok for amazon to fail one of the two questions?
What comes next?

Thanks In Advance.

You could get a phone screen still.

Really? Good to hear. I felt terrible for not being able to crack the second question.

Yeah, don’t worry. But don’t get your hopes up too. Good luck

Related question: Anyone know how long it usually takes to hear back after OA2? The email I got was super open in terms of when I could hear back. I passed all test cases on mine :)

I suggest to talk with the recruiter and follow up on status.

Ohh i got my OA result in a day actually. Gave it Saturday Morning. Recruiter pinged Monday and said “test cases were failing. I will setup a phone interview “.

      @dynasty After OA2?
Also, how'd the phone interview go and do you know if that's the last round?

The first question is generally basic and almost all of the times about some kind of sorting. The second question is what gets you through. Most probably it will be a reject but did you solve the problem offline and request the recruiter to have that checked ?

No. I do have an idea now on how to solve it but not sure if I can do it and send it to the recruiter or just leave it as is.

Well, I know friends that could not solve the problem on time but solved it later within the next 2-3 hours and sent it to the recruiter. They did get calls. How many test cases did your solution pass ?

Just one Lol! Didn’t had enough time and then was too tired. I did the assessment around 1 am.

Hahaha yeah, but was kind of the only time I had. Been super busy at work trying to have features ready for deadline.

I did both questions with time to spare, passing all test cases, and they said to skip the phone interview and go straight to interviews.

Depends on the team I guess. On my team, candidates have a choice of a TPS or Online Assessment. Positive outcome of either is a direct onsite.
I don't think many team follow up an OA with a TPS. So yeah, while you did great on your OA, this was more than likely the next step anyway

I did the whole 70 minute assessment for sde intern in 20 minutes. Directly got the offer without interview lol. I think its an Amazon wide thing and not team specific for new grad roles at least.

I’m not a new grad, and they told me there’s usually a phone interview afterwards.

I just didn’t bother scheduling an interview because I changed my mind.

They lied to you, and also it's a known fact that Amazon recruiters don't know the process themselves.
Amazon is pretty strict about having just 2 rounds - 1. TPS or OA, 2. Onsite.

Better luck again in 6 months or whatever the cool off period is. Similar thing happened with my friend and he failed

Yeah. That’s what I thought, but wanted to make sure. I’ve heard some people still get a phone screening, but wasn’t sure.

The OA is pretty fair and appropriate. OP, I'm afraid if you can't solve that problem in time you're going to have a difficult time solving the on-site interview questions, or solving them in an appropriate amount of time.

Consider this a sign that you need to practice more.

Yeah, but also I don’t feel this questions really test someone’s ability to do the job. I will definitely practice more for the next time I apply.

Say what you will, but those barriers have hired some pretty awesome people. Seriously all my coworkers I feel like they all definitely belong here.

OP time management is another thing you probably need to work on. Did you spend too much time overthinking the first question and not leave yourself enough room for the second? Committed code is better than perfect uncommitted code everytime.

I actually spent the majority on the second question. The first one took 5-10 min tops. I got blocked once the second didn’t work after I coded and I panicked and went through like 4 different approaches that didn’t worked.

    Just gave my online assessment,

    22/23 for first question
    7/15 passed on seconds.

What are my odds of passing the test?
