Amazon Offer - Paycut

Interviewed for L5 but got L4. Recruiter told I will be on L5 path as soon as I join (this is BS ik)

Recruiter asked competing offers and current comp and straight up told me we cannot beat any of your offer or current comp. Recruiter was rude once I shared my current comp numbers and was like you couldn't clear L5 so don't expect these numbers by us (in rude tone). I told her can you please wait till Google HC result and she was like for one candidate I can't keep the entire pool waiting, I will generate the offer & you can sign it in 48 hours or leave it.

Current TC: 180K (155k base rest RSUs)
On track to promotion in December (180k base later - 220k TC)
Amazon will offer me numbers by Wednesday.

What should I do? Should I take a pay cut if they don't beat my comp? Is pay cut justified for Amazon brand name?

Full time US YOE: < 1 YOE
Total YOE: 2.5 years

There's a better way to tell no than being rude.
One of the recruiter is rude and hiring manager was rude. Rest all were nice.
Also thanks for advice. Do you mean stick to CK?

    • A pay cut and working for a disrespectful manager? Sounds like a dream job!

(I think you have your andwer on whether to even look at their numbers. You can politely let them know you’re no longer interested.)

There were other 3 candidates that day. We met after interview and all had same opinion on Manager.
Personal feeling - I could see myself being put into PIP by manager's expressions in the interview. He was brilliant (L6 in 5 years) but didn't found him pleasant to talk to in the interview.

  • OP - if the hiring manager is as bad as you say, and you can imagine getting on a pip, please for the love of God don't proceed further with Amazon! Even if they offer a higher TC, your mental health is worth a lot more!

Don’t do the mistake I did.Don’t take a pay cut.
Recruiters promise lot of things to get prospective employees onboard - but once u get hired , it’s u and your manager that need to work hard to get level set.

But everything aside, this doesn't look too bad considering it's seattle and your experience. I heard you'll be able to learn a lot at amazon and grow your career. So even if you don't have any other offers, I wouldn't be disappointed.

They explicitly assume 15% YoY growth in stock price in stock grant planning. Until recently it’s been conservative, now it’s a lowball. Curious what they’ll do about this if the stock stays relatively flat for a bit.
      Oct 9
    • SoundHound pxzrog
But it's not like Amazon is the only stock that grows. Other companies don't overvalue or take growth into account for their shares when calculating tc. I wonder why they do this at the risk of losing credibility.
      Oct 9
    • Amazon / Eng firefly123
Yeah I think it’s a really dumb practice that’s been masked by a hugely performing stock. Without the stock WAY outperforming I think talented engineers will find superior offers outside Amazon.

Only consider 5-20% of RSUs in your TC calculation

5% if you get "PIP"d out before you 2 year anniversary (very common),, 20% if you get PIP'D out before your 3rd year anniversary.

Amazon can beat 180K TC for L4. They will give you an exploding offer before Google HC result so be prepared for it.

Probably not 230k... I guess it depends on your interview, but I had another 200k+ offer and they didn't match. If you crushed it, I assume you can try for near 200k
      Oct 7
    • Amazon amazons
You’re not getting 200k for L4. I’ve never seen higher than low 180s.

When comparing Amazon offer TC, only consider the stocks that will vest on the first 2 years.

More than half of folks get churned out before 2 years are over.

Or choose to leave because this place blooooows
      Oct 7
    • Microsoft isio37
      When I say half I meant churn/leave.

Best to only include the first 2 years of stock vesting.

48 hour deadline is just stupid. Try to not get the official numbers as long as possible because they'll start the "48-hours" after that. Although I really doubt you'll be able to wait for google HC, team match, then an offer within a month.

    • SoundHound pxzrog
Also, amazon recruiters think they work for a god-tier company. They were the lowest offer among multiple others (including faang), and they wanted me to sign asap without negotiating... wtf?

I told recruiter don't generate offer letter and tell me verbally and she was like no, I can't keep entire pool waiting for 1 candidate.
Like Seriously! How is one person blocking a queue when they are hiring so many people.
      Oct 7
    • SoundHound pxzrog
Yea I got the same message as well (other candidates are waiting and you holding them up isn't fair). I'm pretty sure that's BS since passing amazon interview lets you get into any generic team.

    • Amazon / Eng mgtE45
Before going into the offer generation ask the recruiter for an additional phone call with clarifications. Tell him/her that you need to evaluate your entire financial setup and given your current workload it’ll take you 2 weeks. Analyse your benefits, taxes, rents, mortages etc. and understand how much you are making. Play the scenario when accepting Amazon’s offer what will be your new cost of living and what you are going to make then. Given that see how much you expect from changing the company given move/new team/project etc. Have a call and explain that to the recruiter. Stories about L5 path should not make you fly. Manager can change and a new manager might have a completely different view.
      Oct 7
  • Amazon git clone
You should not join if your current comp is more than what amazon is willing to offer. If they want you they should at least match your current TC.

Out of curiosity are both, you current location and amazon offer, for the same location?
    Oct 7 3
    • Credit Karma 🥺Sad
      OP
No. Current location is SF and Amazon is in Seattle so I will keep in mind the COL and no state tax factor of course.
      Oct 7
    • Microsoft isio37
Seattle gets a ~10% downgrade from SF because of cost of living differences and income tax.

You can easily live on the East/North/South and have a <30min commute, which is a huge reduction from SF.

I knew I cannot clear L5 but at least I will get top of band L4.
If I wouldn't had asked L5, they would have lowballed me even more badly
      Oct 7
    • Rubrik tuct8tt8
Fwiw, they lowballed me for level 5 offer as well, and I said no thank you. With their stock vesting schedule they gotta offer more than market to make it attractive but they don't. Apparently their offer is based on 15% yoy growth on stock value, that's what I heard from other threads here.

Get them to generate a formal offer. At least it'll be in their system for the future.

I know of at least one case where in a situation like this, the system showed "unsuccessful" when the person applied later.

Get an offer in writing :)

This is an exploding offer, they got you right where they want you. You need to stick up to your guns and say I won't accept the offer unless I get my worth, end of fkin story.

Dont take the pay cut. Also, dont trust the path to promo argument.
very similar situation happened to a colleague. interviewed for L5 with 2 years of exp, was offered L4 and lured that he will be promoted within few months. He joined the team, and has already spent 1.5 years with no talks of promo yet.

Amazon doesn't value people. It's a utility for them so don't know expect them to wait for you. Whatever recruiter said is true, they go to next person if the numbers don't match.
Sometimes negotiation is on table when you bring immersive experience the team wants but not always.
