Interviewed for L5 but got L4. Recruiter told I will be on L5 path as soon as I join (this is BS ik) Recruiter asked competing offers and current comp and straight up told me we cannot beat any of your offer or current comp. Recruiter was rude once I shared my current comp numbers and was like you couldn't clear L5 so don't expect these numbers by us (in rude tone). I told her can you please wait till Google HC result and she was like for one candidate I can't keep the entire pool waiting, I will generate the offer & you can sign it in 48 hours or leave it. Current TC: 180K (155k base rest RSUs) On track to promotion in December (180k base later - 220k TC) Amazon will offer me numbers by Wednesday. What should I do? Should I take a pay cut if they don't beat my comp? Is pay cut justified for Amazon brand name? Full time US YOE: < 1 YOE Total YOE: 2.5 years

A pay cut and working for a disrespectful manager? Sounds like a dream job! (I think you have your andwer on whether to even look at their numbers. You can politely let them know you’re no longer interested.)

I just gave it a shot. I knew I cannot clear L5 but at least I will get top of band L4. If I wouldn't had asked L5, they would have lowballed me even more badly
Fwiw, they lowballed me for level 5 offer as well, and I said no thank you. With their stock vesting schedule they gotta offer more than market to make it attractive but they don't. Apparently their offer is based on 15% yoy growth on stock value, that's what I heard from other threads here.
Don’t do the mistake I did.Don’t take a pay cut. Recruiters promise lot of things to get prospective employees onboard - but once u get hired , it’s u and your manager that need to work hard to get level set.

Amazon doesn't value people. It's a utility for them so don't know expect them to wait for you. Whatever recruiter said is true, they go to next person if the numbers don't match. Sometimes negotiation is on table when you bring immersive experience the team wants but not always.
Amazon can beat 180K TC for L4. They will give you an exploding offer before Google HC result so be prepared for it.

I got an Amazon offer a few years ago for L4 that’s more than 180K. I didn’t take it.
Get them to generate a formal offer. At least it'll be in their system for the future. I know of at least one case where in a situation like this, the system showed "unsuccessful" when the person applied later. Get an offer in writing :)

Dont take the pay cut. Also, dont trust the path to promo argument. very similar situation happened to a colleague. interviewed for L5 with 2 years of exp, was offered L4 and lured that he will be promoted within few months. He joined the team, and has already spent 1.5 years with no talks of promo yet.
