I made vacation plans for Christmas and would not want to change it. My start date would be around last week of November. How many personal days will I have by Dec 20? My offer letter says 10 vacation days, 3 sick days and 6 personal days and that all of them accrue over the year. If each of them accrue separately, by Dec 20, I ll have 0.83 vacation, 0.25 sick and 0.5 personal days. Is that how it works at Amazon? So I will not have any personal days? Thanks
That’s how it works.
So what do you suggest? I really do not wish to cancel my vacation plans
Tell the recruiter. Unless it’s more than a week, shouldn’t be a big deal, but you’ll probably have to take it unpaid.
Talk to the recruiter. This a common situation when anyone joins a company.
A lot of places will let u go negative in your time off up to a certain point (rarely more then 10 days). You might be able to just do that
Yeah but Amazon has an automated system where you apply ur personal days I think, so I am not sure if the negative will work at Amazon
Google also has an automated system, but you can go negative. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to go negative, and accrue until you're positive again. If you leave the company when your balance is negative, you'll have to pay them (your hourly rate * 8 * number of days negative).
🤣
Ask your hiring manager. You can delay your start date with some teams for couple of months
You get your personal days at the beginning of the year, in your case it will be beginning of your work. I think it’s three days. Also talk to your manager, they sometimes will let you “go negative”. They will ask you to put request in the future when you’ll accrue enough days. In the very worst case, you can take leave of absence which will require a bit more legwork with HR.
That sounds great, 3 days should be enough
Also another question. Is the year in Amazon from Jan to Dec or some other timeframe?

You should make clear that a condition of you joining is that you have existing vacation plans.
Is that possible? I thought applying for vacation days are standard through an automated system
Yes, it is possible. Work it out with your hiring manager as part of the negotiation.
