Amazon Phone Screen - Should I study Leadership Principles?

I have an Amazon phone screen later this week. Do I need to know the leadership principles? I've just been grinding leetcode bc I also have Google, Facebook and Microsoft interviews to study for 😅

Make sure to have 2-3 stories for each principle, sometimes they ask like - do you have any other example.

BTW everyone, did have two leadership principles questions FWIW

Like two examples of X and Y leadership principle

I've never seen someone fail a phone screen because they didn't have a good LP answer. Just don't raise any red flags

A Phone Screen is usually 70% technical and 30% behavioral so do not skip going through the LPs. This is an advice coming straight from the recruiting team.

Hell yes and your answers should demonstrate those LPs. I have seen highly technical folks falling flat as they missed taking a look at the LPs (the DNA of Amazon)

Thanks everyone. I thought it was just on site so I was going to focus on LC for now. Should I memorize them or just bring up examples when they mention each one?

You’ll be on the phone so just print them out or have them up on your laptop so you can easily reference them. They won’t expect you to have them memorized. It’s not a quiz...they just want to know you looked and read them.

Thank you everyone. Hard to find a lot of concrete examples for each one since I'm still junior. But for some of these principles I have plenty of examples

Just go in knowing the LPs and their definitions, that will help you roll with the punches when you are asked to "Describe a time ..."

Phone Screens aren't so much based on LPs but they do get asked. On-site is where you will see the heaviest use of LPs.

No not really. I mean you could make sure you know the STAR method and use it but the phone screen is mostly technical.

      Nope it’s behaviors as well

FWIW, I didn’t have this come up at all in my phone screen. It was mostly coding and then discussing my background broadly. Leadership principles were very important for onsite though.

The discussing your background part is tied to leadership principles

Phone interviews are mostly coding. No LP questions mostly.

Yes of course study them! They’ll probably pick one of the LPs to see if you looked at them. My question was easy “what’s your favorite principle” mostly cause we were short on time. I find if you think of the principles as an ideal employee and you think of yourself as an ideal employee then you’ll probably lots of examples to give them. Think of projects you led, or when you stood up for what’s right when no one else did. The more you think through the examples the better responses will be and they can see how you’ll be on their team and as an employee in Amazon.

Absofuckinglutely. LP’ will come up at some point, and it will be a determining factor.

You will likely be asked an LP question at the end. I advise looking through the principles and have one example in mind for each.

Just bring up examples after you gauge which LP is the question based on.
