How is Amazon in Portland, OR? What teams are there, what's the culture, etc? I've lived near Portland so I'm familiar with the city and I'm deciding where I wanna go now for a new grad position.
Tbh, i didn't even realize we had an office in Portland outside of the warehouses.
Why the fuck would you consider Portland for a new job in tech... There's nothing there... Go to either San Francisco or Seattle... Its not all its cracked up to be in Portlandia... Gets fucking boring really fucking quick...
Hey now, Portland ain't that bad. I miss it. And you got Intel out in Hillsboro.
You mean the one that is constantly laying off engineers ... Yeah have fun with that... Yeah Portland is fun to visit and enjoy for a weekend. For a life choice in terms of where to live... It fucking sucks
I lived there 7 years and would move back vOv
Part of me wishes that more tech companies would open offices in the Portland area so that I could someday return home. But having seen what that does to property values, maybe that wouldn’t be the best.
Yeah people there already hate transplants so much because of the housing prices, it's crazy
ohhh that explains the blood thirsty tools screaming go away
There are quiet a few smaller tech companies doing well in Portland. Amazons presence will also continue to grow. As far as culture at the Amazon Portland office, Elemental was a startup before its acquisition so it still keeps a lot of the perks like fully stocked kitchens and cold brew / Kombucha on tap.
Sweet, do you work there? Amazon is letting me choose location so I'm thinking of maybe going back home to Portland.
Portland is a great place to live and prosper provided you have a decent job. Good place to start your own business along with job since you get time in hand, rather than on road.
Yeah I've lived there for a while. Amazon is letting me choose location so I thought I'd consider moving back home to Portland
RetailSystem also has some teams in Portland
The new office ("AWS Elemental" office) has mostly AWS folks, and most of those are Elemental, but there is at least one Amazon.com dev team also, and some assorted other people (finance, etc) from the retail side. The AWS teams include a new service/dev team working on a new service, plus some sales account teams, SAs, etc.
The new office is fantastic. The largest team is AWS Elemental.
Do you work there? How is it?
I do, I enjoy it. I love Portland and the Amazon office has a good vibe. All the teams I’ve worked with here are great. Plus it’s close enough to Seattle to make interfacing with teams up there very easy.
