I keep seeing references to the “SDE1 bar”. I believe each level has a bar. What exactly does someone have to do to meet this bar? New SDE1 to be wondering. I have a while before my start date and will be starting an unfaimilar stack. I plan on busting my hump getting ready, but any suggestions are appreciated.
"Do not believe that your team's body odor smells of perfume" .. so, as new sde1 .. tell everybody that they smell like shit..
Commit enough code, do enough code reviews, close enough Ops tickets. That’s about it.
You must know how to balance this tree.
If you can write code for the clearly defined tasks you’re given, you meet the SDE1 bar.
I’m in a large enterprise, but non-FANG right now. I am good at front and back end stuff, but do FANGs move faster? In non-FANG jobs, I see a lot of “build an endpoint, build a modal” type things which I find easy. Obviously FANGs do that too, but how much faster are your sprints relative to everyone else?
Amazon’s in particular are slightly stressful. The work is not hard - especially at SDE1/2 levels. My suggestion is to use your onboarding time in the company to ramp up as much as you can, and just have focused 5-6 hours of work done per day. You’ll exceed expectations. Most of FANGs use custom in house tech. So I’d say chill right now- you’re gonna have a fast ride later :)
All of it is a potshot in the dark tbh
