Amazon SDE2 vs LinkedIn Senior SDE

I have 2 offers on hand. Amazon is offering around 215,000$ annual comp for Seattle location. Apparently LinkedIn is offering the same for San Francisco location.
I am confused with what should I chose. Amazon obviously makes sense money wise but I really feel work environment at LinkedIn would be much better than Amazon. Frustrating part is LinkedIn recruiters are not ready to budge on numbers
Teams
Amazon : fashion tech
LinkedIn : one of the recently acquired startup

Recommend Amazon, $215k in sfo is like $180k in seattle

That’s a myth too. Depends where you commute from. You can live in the east bay and have a BART commute to SFO of an hour. That way you are paying almost similar rents if you’re renting. For me $215 SFO = $190 in Seattle + Sun all year

But why on earth would you spend commuting 1 hour of your life every day? And east bay ain’t that great to live when compared to Seattle downtown

Because suburbs are cheaper ? And not all can live in the city. Duh !

I was pointing to your earlier comment about it being a myth. Not everyone likes living in a suburb. I don’t. Duh!

@asurion... you are missing the 10% state tax that seattle doesn’t have.

Lol LinkedIn is only considered high tier because of their comp. The actual work and learning at Amazon will be much, much better, as long as you are in a high growth area. I am not familiar with fashion tech, but it sounds like a promising area.

Oh, is that why everyone one is using the open source technologies developed at LinkedIn, like Kafka?

^Dude you don't need to qualify yourself about LinkedIn. It makes you look weak. Ultimately the choice is up to the OP. Personally I would not leave Amazon unless it's for Google or Uber due to TC and high impact/interesting projects. Other companies, no way.

Better culture, WLB and frankly I feel better challenges ( depends on team though). Amazon will burn you out in 4 years or less.

Fact is, you will switch companies every few years. That is how you really learn and grow. In Seattle, you only have Amazon and MSFT as real players. In Bay Area you have 100s of real players, like Google, Facebook, Uber, Twitter, and a ton of startups. These companies are head quartered here for a reason. That is the reason why real developers come here despite the cost. You build your career here. Just go at a cafe in downtown Palo Alto and listen to the conversation at the next table. Someone is in the early stages of the next big thing. That is why techies come here. The opportunity to do much more.

If you are young and single go to Amazon. It will be much better for your future growth and wealth. If you work for 4 years at Amazon, you will graduate as a saught after engineer.

Yeah dude... Looks like LinkedIn in SF is the best choice. But if you want to learn and one day be competitive to get into Google or FB I'd go with Amazon. The system design knowledge you'll get at Amazon is unparalleled.

  • Oracle redvsblue
Try to make Amazon budge on numbers like get it to $230-$240k and just go to Amazon. You’ll get stressed out but you’ll learn a lot. 215k is too low for SF. I wouldn’t move there with less than 300k.

Your offers make me assume you’re young person with less than 3yoe so perhaps you care more about impact and TC, not necessarily WLB. If you get stressed out at Amazon, can always leave after a year. Other companies love people from Amazon because they know a lot.

What is fashion tech? Is that the “make clothes on demand” efforts? If so I’d take that in a second. Will revolutionize clothing manufacturing over next 5-10 years, and every other manufacturer will need to compete, so you’ll have some really critical domain expertise.

Have you heard about their prime wardrobe initiative?

I know someone who used to be on prime wardrobe team. He said it was teh sux. Lol don’t go.

@obiy54 - if you share the team details at both places then feedback would be easier to give.
Otherwise, work env & wlb wise: LinkedIn.
Don't worry about the TC..not a big factor here.

    • Amazon hsl44428q
SF is considerably more expensive then Seattle. Not a big factor?
      Jan 24
    • Bank of America / Other tSWv17
@hsl44528q - fair qs; at the level indicated (3 YOE) by OP, being in SFO (expensive area) is an ok trade-off as Seattle is of course opportunity rich, but not as rich as Bay Area still. 😌

For sure not LinkedIn Sr sde standard offer. Either you just passed hc or this startup is not following linkedin comp standards. I was offered $245k as swe 1.5 yrs back in bay area.

Avoid softline. If you are into fashion tech there are better companies: Stitch fix, Everlane, etc. if you are into amazon there are better teams.

If you are taking about Glint they seem like a fun group of people. If you are a person that likes the idea of staying with a company for a long time LinkedIn couldn't be better and many people don't ever want to leave but if you want to be change and always stay with the coolest and highest paying maybe Amazon would be a better choice for you.

Also if your numbers are Total Comp you can do better than $215 as SDE I can imagine Senior SDE would be much higher
